NASCAR's Riot

So you want to go back to the "Good Old Days," eh? Who wants to go back to this:

"Back in the day" at one Grand National event, the race was shortened to half because of deteriorating track conditions. The race was stopped for track repair and with fifty laps to go the race resumed. Immediately after the race resumed the NASCAR officials all got out of their uniforms and left the track completely. A volunteer flagman threw the checkered and the fans rioted. They blocked the track and held the drivers, and teams hostage for over two hours until State Highway Patrol arrived and released the crews and drivers. During the riot one crew member was attacked with a 2X4 but the crew member took the 2X4 and broke it over the attacker's head.

The newspaper report says:
"Some of the fans wanted their money back. 'I paid five bucks to see a 500 lap race,' one of them shouted. 'Someone owes me some laps or some money!'"

Another final quote: "In the end, four spectators were treated at nearby hospitals for injuries and several arrests were made."

Makes the recent Pocono thingee look like something whipped up by Martha Stewart, doesn't it?

Your challenge, should you decide to accept: Name the site of this race. Give the date and name the winning driver (A name you'll all recognize).

Good luck. This tape will self destruct in two minutes...

Darn! You almost had it, Steve... Two out of three is a winner.

Bobby won the last race run at Ashville-Weaverville. The race which caused the riot was won by Junior Johnson.

I couldn't remember the winner so I just took a shot in the dark. The era was correct.
