The story Waltrip has told about this is that, as a driver, he got tired of hearing his spotter or crew chief say "green, green, green" at the start of every race and wanted to hear something more original.

Everyone know how DW like those old rock and roll songs and Chubby Checker (of the Twist fame) had a song named Pony Time and in it boogity boogity boogity was part of it.

I don't know if this is where he actually got it from, but just a guess.

Two places, Hacksaw.

He stole them from either Chubby Checkers 1961 record, "Pony Time," or from Barry Mann's record of around 1965, "Who Put the Bop (in the bop-sha-bop sha-bop)" If you look through some old posts in our archives where DW is mentioned in the title, you'll find one of my old post with links to the lyrics of these two songs. Or, you can simply google "Pony Time," or Barry Mann and Who Put the Bop.

To put matters straight, I think DW, unlike his puttzo brother, was a great driver. The guy could really drive, and to this day he has some criticisms of NA$CAR which I agree with. But DW has to be one of NASCAR absolute worst winners. I've disliked his self-aggrandising interviews, his amateur theatrical antics, and his general personality since I first saw him in 1978. But, again, to give the guy his due, he could really drive until the last five or six years of his career.
