An easy one...

Who took the checkered flag at the first official Strictly Stock (now Cup) race at Charlotte N C, June 19, 1949? What kind of car was it, and who was the owner?

I'll go strictly on memory here, YELK. I might have a few minor points wrong but you'll get the basic answer

Glen Dunwiddy.
He was driving a black 1948 or 1949 Ford coupe.
He was disqualified after the race because NASCAR/ Bill France Sr. enforced the Strictly Stock rule and Glen was found to have run a car set up to carry shine and was running non-stock truck springs with an extra leaf added. He was awarded last place and Jim Roper was given the official win, driving a stock 49 Lincoln.
I'd have to look at my records to give you the owner of the car but I'll take a SWAG at it. I'll guess Frank Christain. I believe Christain had a history of running hoochand and his wife, Sara ran one of his cars in the race, but I seem to recall he entered two cars?

How'd I do?

?

Re: An easy one...

Bob you have the facts very close, and close enough to say you're correct. The driver was Glenn Dunnaway and the car owner was Hubert Westmoreland. You are correct about the springs and Westmoreland sued NASCAR, but France won according to the record books, which is the official account. But Westmoreland said he was paid well by Bill France, (under the table) which has happend on more than once.

Oh yeah, this was another trick question, of sorts, when most would answer Jim Roper. Can't fool you though Bob. WTG.
