Richard's Number

The first year Richard drove his cars sported different numbers at various times, 142, 42A and 2 then he became famous in the number 43. In 1965 he drove a car with another numberfor over half the season. What was the number and why the change?

Re: Richard's Number

The first thing that comes to my mind is that is the year that NASCAR initially banned the Hemi. Richard and family raced a car numbered 43 Jr., but it was a drag racer.

You are correct. 43/jr. was a hemi-powered Barracuda. Now, can you tell me another driver, who was an active driver the entire season last year, who spent a year driving AA/F dragsters?

Nope. Eric Jones?

I'll give you a hint; he ran IHRA for most of the '96 season in a AA/Top Fuel dragster. He drove in every race in his series' season last year. Keep looking; the info is out there. I bet someone over in the NASCAR sestion remembers this; ask around over there.

I leave for Cozamel, Belize and Guatumala tomorrow morning. I'll sign off for awhile sometime this afternoon or evening.

OK.. It was John Andretti. And I lied; it was 1993, vice 1996.. Sorry, Iwas going strictly from memory and "Old Teflon Brain" here got the years confused.

The following is cut from the following link:
Drag Racing Online

"Veteran Indy 500 racer John Andretti of the Pennsylvania-based racing Andretti Family also raced at the U.S. Nationals, but he did not qualify. Andretti did license in Jack Clark?s Taco Bell-sponsored Top Fueler and qualified at the1993 Fram Nationals at Atlanta Dragway where he lasted two rounds before losing to Mike Dunn and the La Victoria Salsa dragster, carding a best time of 4.97/295.85. Andretti is the only one in this elite group that has ran at the Brickyard 400 in a NASCAR ride as well as the Indy 500 and the U.S. Nationals"

Re: Richard's Number

Didn't Petty drive #42 for a few races in the early 80's once Kyle started racing. I know Kyle ran the #43 and Richard was in the #42. Anyone remember that?

Steve

Kyle may have run the 43 in either Arca or Busch, but not Cup, he was in the 42, then he went off to the Wood Brothers, then Felix Sabates. Lets see that gives Kyle the 21, 7 or 11, and the 42, before he rejoined Petty Enterprises with the 44. As I remember it Richard did run the 42 in several races in the 1960's, but most of the time it was the 43.
