Alright so the answer is ...
Tony Stewart in 1999
JKS gets it again.

The only reason than answer isn't John Andretti 1994 was because he didn't complete the Coke 600 (his car broke)

Very good discussion to try to get the answer though. And it was Tony's rookie season.

dang until you said champion I'd say david gilliland but he played with Tiger Woods in high school....hmm its not sadler because he played basketball for UNC ward burton went to Elon and Newman went to Purdue so I'm going to guess Dale Jarrett
