Bristol Heat

What 3 years did Bristol have co-winners due to high-heat?

Who were the co-drivers for those races?

It so happens I was at one of them. In 1969 Richard Petty relieved David Pearson and went on to win in a Holman-Moody Ford. I remember the day was one of the hottest I ever attended a race in. I think the temp was over 100°. They announced that David got out of the car because he was sick with the flu but as hot as it was everyone thought it was the heat. That was the only race we ever attended at Bristol. We didn't sit in the stands but under a tree on a little hill overlooking T3-4. The track was, of course, asphalt back then and it just radiated heat!

The next year Dave Marcis drove in relief of Bobby Allison
The next year (1971) Friday Hassler drove relief for Charlie Glotzbach.

Your source probably shows Richard relieving David because of a physical sickness (flu) but believe me, it was the heat, no matter what the record or Pearson says.

I missed Johnny Allen/Jack Smith, but I'd check the Freddy and Ned finish.
My data base shows the race run on 7/28/63 and was run by Fred Lorenzen running 500 laps. I show Ned Jarrett finishing 25th, still running finishing 399 laps. I checked the Spring race, ran in March and that one was won by Fireball.

The written account of the race starts:
  • BRISTOL, tn (July 28 ) - Record-wrecking Fred Lorenzen held off Richard Petty on a tenacious late race battle and scored a popular victory in the third annual Volunteer 500 at Bristol International Speedway. It was Lorenzen's third win of the year and moved him over the $90,000 mark in winnings.

No mention of Freddy being relieved.

Won't argue with ya... main reason because your knowledge mostly comes from living it.

I got another one for you. What is special about the 1971 race that Hassler took? (I'll see if my source is remotely right)

It was caution-free (Which gives you an indication of just how dominant Glotzbach's car was. He pitted under green, switched drivers, and still won by over three laps!!!).
Glotzbach's car was owned by Charlotte Motor Speedway and prepared by Junior Johnson.
It was the only time Hassler took a checkered flag in his NASCAR career.

Those are the only ones I can come up with. BTW, these are from research, not personal knowledge.

It holds the distinction as being the fastest Bristol Race to date. (if the source is right... I don't use this source to often as it is open to the public to be edited.)

I agree. the Official NASCAR Preview and Press Guide (2009) give Bristol race record as (266.5 miles) Charlie Glotzbach (101.074 mph) on July 11, 1971.

Yep, that'd make it pretty special.
