Robby Gordon, Yates Deal Was Close

Deal or no deal? Robby Gordon says he and Yates were close to agreement

By DAVID POOLE

The Charlotte Observer

Robby Gordon said Friday that he thought he had a deal to buy Robert Yates Racing before it fell through two weeks ago.

The deal, Gordon said, is off right now but he also said it has been off and on before

Gordon also indicated that he could be switching manufacturers with the Cup teams he owns.

“I think I could become the No. 2 Ford team relatively quickly,” he said. “It would take a lot to become the No. 2 Chevrolet team.”

Re: Robby Gordon, Yates Deal Was Close

I read on RacingOne.com that he tried buying 1/2 of RYR, not the whole deal.....

Gordon Did Try to Buy Into RYR
Robby Gordon stated Friday during the NEXTEL Wake-up call with the media that he did try to buy half of Robert Yates Racing's two cars.

"We had funding and sponsorship in place for the 88 car," Gordon said. "We have our car funded for the 7 car. I wanted to buy half of his two cars. That was the deal that was proposed. So whatever you want to hear on the other side of the street, the deal was I wasn't going to do it unless I could own half of those two cars.

Gordon thought he could have been a good coach for the new talent at RYR in David Gilliland and Stephen Leight.

"To date I don't know what they are going to have for experience showing up at the Daytona 500.

"Who knows what is going to happen. There are a lot of things that made sense for Robert, myself, Doug - a lot of good alliances there. It is unfortunate that it is dead," Gordon said.
