Question Do you remember "Connie Saylor"?

Hi all,

I am searching for old photos, articles or anything relating to my dad who was a Nascar driver ( Connie Saylor) in the 70's and 80's. He passed away in 93' of cancer. We want his grandchildren to always remember him or atleast learn about him and how he loved racing. I was hoping that some of you nascar fans would be old enough to know who he was and maybe someone would have some info. or know where I can find more. A lot of the stuff we had has disappeared over the years. He drove several cars over the years:
1978- #49
79'-#6 ~Olds.
80'-#4~ Chev. for G.C. Spencer Racing
81'- #4
82'-#4
83'-#6 Chev.#4 Olds~Morgan-McClure Racing (their first driver)
84'-#37 Pont #23~Chev.~for Bahre, #6 Chev.forUS Racing, #29~Chev.-For Adcox Racing,
85' - #99 Chev. Ball Racing
86'- # 64-ford,for Sunny King Ford, #99- Ball Racing, #51 Ford
87'-#64- , #6-Chev. for Kroger, #6-Olds-for Slender You,
88' - #99- Chev. Eagle Engines, #34-Buick.
I am trying to collect photos of each of the cars he drove. I have only a few.
He was inducted into the Nascar Hall of Fame in 93' and I would also love to find some documents on that also,

Please reply if you know ANYTHING at all about my dad! Even just a story, if you met him or someone you know, knew him, etc. I would love to hear it and keep it for our memory books of him.
Thank you and looking forward to your replies.

Re: Do you remember "Connie Saylor"?

The only thing I can add, for sure, is that the #49 you show as Connie driving in 1978 was the Dodge owned by G.C. Spencer.

I actually saw Connie drive once at a race in Anderson, Indiana. However, I am really hazy on the date and the race itself. I believe it was an IMCA race (Int'l Motor Contest Assoc) race and the reason I remember was that there were two drivers with odd first names in the race, Connie Saylor and Joy Fair. This was back in either the late 50's or early 60's. (Connie would have neen in his early 20's or even late teens.) I believe he and Joy (A driver from the Detroit area) drove a lot of big money "outlaw" stock car races around the mid-west in the early 70's. I seem to remember that Connie was in the company of Dick Trickle, Bob Senneker, Mike Eddy, Vern Schrock, Joy Fair, George Beard, Ed Howe, and Donnie Gregory a lot. Bob Pronger, a driver I mentioned here awhile back raced a lot of $ races in N. Indiana, N. Illinois and S Wisconsin, too. I'm absolutely positive that Connie was in no way close company with Bob. These were all big money drivers who showed up at small tracks all over the mid west whenever they had a race with a good sized purse.

Did Connie ever run Sprint cars or roadsters? If so, I may have seen him run the Little 500 in Anderson, but somehow I don't think this is right. But I know I did see him race on one occasion.

You might try contacting some of the drivers I've listed above, or try contacting the American Speed Association and the Int'l Motor Contest Assoc. They all may have some info, or maybe even some pictures of your relative.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thumbs up Re: Do you remember "Connie Saylor"?

Thank you all so much! I did find a link that team yates posted that I had never seen before. That was really something to see that pic. of him with Dale Sr. and the others. (Years later after that pic. my dad relief drove for dale when dale sr. asked him to after dad had engine trouble I believe. He said it was the best ride he's ever been in. I think he finished the race in a really good position.) I had never seen that one! I'm bidding on it now!! Would make my brother a great christmas present. As for Bob's response, I'm not sure if that was my dad you saw at those races in wisc. or Ind. BUT how would I know, I wasn't born yet. I will pass this along to my mom and see if she remembers any of those names or places. Thank you for the information. It's really amazing to me that my dad's name is still around after all this time. If he only knew. Please, if anyone finds anything more let me know.

Re: Do you remember "Connie Saylor"?

I remember the name because it is rather unusual and I remember watching him race. I was looking at pictures of Connie at a friend's home in Bristol,TN not long ago. Bill was at one-time a crew chief and very involved in Nascar racing in the 80's. Perhaps I can find out if I could get copies.
