NASCAR and racial discrimination

NASCAR sued for racial discrimination: A former African-American crewman who once worked on NASCAR's Winston Cup circuit sued the governing body of the U.S. stock car series on Tuesday for race discrimination and breach of contract. David Scott, who worked as a motorcoach driver to one of the racing teams, claimed NASCAR executives deceived him and did not fulfill promises of a job following a well-publicized 1999 racial incident involving white motorcoach drivers, according to the complaint filed in Manhattan federal court that seeks unspecified damages. Scott was harassed by at least two white motorcoach drivers from different racing teams, including being called "n-word" and an incident where he was confronted by the pair with one wearing a white pillow case over his head imitating a Ku Klux Klansman, according to the complaint. When the incident was reported in the media, the complaint said, top NASCAR executives flew Scott back home to North Carolina promising him a future job, but while negotiations continued over the next five years, a job never materialized. Scott seeks back pay and compensatory damages for loss of employment benefits and mental suffering. NASCAR was not immediately available for comment.(Reuters)(8-9-2006)

I remember this story, then never heard anymore about it, I guess because NASCAR swept it under the proverbial rug. Anybody else remember this story? Thoughts, comments?!?

Re: NASCAR and racial discrimination

I don't know anything about this story but the same thing is happening to me now. The owner of the company has been promising me the opportunity to make some really big money....all he does is give me a taste every once in a while and then change things back again...but am I going to sue him for racial discrimination beacuse I am white (a minority now) and female?? Heck no....I am moving on to another job...in this world you have to make it on your own, I blame no one but myself if I continue to wait on some psychopath to make a decision that effects my life. C'ya...

...and let's just close this thread now if you want my opionion on racial discriminatioin in this country....what a joke. If the thread goes in that direction i will post more later....

Re: NASCAR and racial discrimination

The problem with this story is the same as all the other media stories. We hear, read or watch what THEY want us to see. I'm not going to get into the problem of racial discrimination since it is larger than all of us. If we continue to pass on information that is only half there then we are doing a great dis-service to every person we pass it on to. When and only when I hear both sides of the story I will continue to not have an opinion about media reported problems such as this. Get the media to be honest and totally truthful and many of these problems will never occur.

No dis-service to me. It merely re-enforces my belief that we only know what the media wants us to know. Truth or lie.

I agree 100%, and usually it is more the lies that we get. There is so many kinds of discrimination: color, sex, age, disability, etc., etc.. The list is entirely to long to list all of them. And if he TRUELY felt discriminated against WHY did he wait since 1999 to finally speak up about it!!!! It's been 7 years, more then likely just looking for a free ride!! If I felt that I had been discriminated against, I would have spoke up right then and there.

Don't be sorry..you did nothing wrong. I merely posted my honest feeliings. Your post generated emotion/discussion, that's why were are here.....beats starting a thread and no one replies...it just sits there like a dead stick.

Even the fact that Q88 posted that he was not going to post was an honest response.

Keep posting girl....

Re: NASCAR and racial discrimination

If nothing else this thread beats the hell out of the "_______ Sucks" threads. I enjoy emotion filled conversation. As long as we don't get into the name calling business to one another this thread like so many others will be fruitful. Now back to what a lousy job the press does.

Re: NASCAR and racial discrimination

I have a question. If NASCAR was racially descriminating, how come there was an African-American driver in a couple of races earlier in the yaer? How come Team Yates is signing Juan Montanya to drive next year and he is Hispanic? It just seems to me that the press sees one little incident and runs with it without doing any research and telling the whole story. It just irks me to no end!

Re: NASCAR and racial discrimination

I think there is far less discrimination in NASCAR and by Racing Fans. I think it was either last year or last spring when NBC tried to set fans up by having people dressed as muslins, put their prayer rugs down and pray at the track, They were totally ignored by the fans. And I think that goes for most racing, my favorite motorcross rider is James Steward. And he is the best, he wins or wrecks. He will take a clean sweep next year.

I believe Montoya is Columbian.

Discrimination exists everywhere you look. It could be race, sex, whatever. Maybe the guy was afraid to come out and say anything until now. Who knows? Dismissing him as someone looking for a free ride only adds to the problem really.

I agree with you Pirate...discrimination exists everywhere....it's just a part of life.

It's like the adult version of school yard shenanagins. When your a child people say "oh children can be so cruel" because aduts think children don't know any better. But when an adult does it, sometimes it comes across as dsicrimination....like the reason it exists doe'nt pass the test. And yes, some adults can be a$$holes and they just don't care. "oh humans can be so cruel"....

I have tried to live by the philosphy that only I am responsible for what happens in my life...if I don't like something and allow myself to stay in a situation where it continues I have no one but myself to blame.

As far as the media playing the discrimination card to "attract" attention to itself, there is always more than one side to a story .... but it never seems to come across that way.
