Re: Your Local Track

back in the day ('60's) when I got out of the navy and found out my brother had robbed all the good stuff off my hot rod and put it on his race car, he soothed my anger by getting me involved in circle track racing. we raced two nights a week: Friday night in Austin at Austin Speed-o-Rama and Saturday night at Pan American Speedway in San Antonio. both were 1/4 mile asphalt tracks, but Pan Am was high banked. both have been abandoned for years, though every once in a while there's a rumor about reviving the Longhorn Speedway (the most current iteration of Austin Speed-o-Rama. ) there was a rumor earlier this year - somebody mowed the weeds in the parking lot and the rumor spread. no chance of Pan Am being revived since it's now in the middle of a housing development.

My daughter married a guy who raced at the Austin track, then he helped my son build his first circle track car.

after my son did his stint on Rich Bickle's Busch and CTS teams, he moved back to Texas, we bought a Super Late Model from Bickle and went racing locally in the now defunct ROMCO series. that series raced at:
  • San Antonio Speedway - a half mile paper clip shaped asphalt track with flat straights and high banked corners. SAS was built shortly after my brother's death in 1973 and was dedicated to him and a few other deceased racers from the San Antonio Area. SAS closed it's doors earlier this year after finding out the cost to make compliance with San Antonio code would be upwards of $80K: the city had annexed the track as part of a major expansion to include the new Toyota plant. The track wasn't locally owned and the property was managed by a 3rd party. neither would put money into the track. the track management, who leased the track for weekly races felt it a bad business decision to pour money into the track when both the owner and property management company would not. so they closed the doors after the 3rd race this year. Since the ROMCO series had been purchased by the same person who was running the weekly shows, and because of a serious decline in car count, he also closed down the series. Now there's about 25 SLMs who are either sitting parked (like mine) or who make the long trek to Mobile and Pensacola to race. some tried adapting to crate motors and running the local Late Model classes in Houston and Austin (Thunder hill), but most have since parked theirs.
  • Houston Motorsports Park Houston Motorsports Park is a 3/8 mile moderately banked asphalt track in NE Houston. this is the cadillac of paved short tracks in Texas and the owners work hard to put on crowd attracting shows.
  • Thunder Hill Raceway Thunder Hill Raceway - Kyle, Texas is also a 3/8 mile moderately banked asphalt track in Kyle, Tx (about 20 miles south of Austin on I35.) Thunder Hill is considered my home track .. mostly since it's only about 12 miles from my house and raceshop. an unusual feature(?) of Thunder Hill is it doesn't have any walls on the corners or back straight - it's not unusual to see one or more racers "take an unplanned offroad excursion" .. it's especially bad if it's been raining (mud gets in the darndest places)
  • Corpus Christi Speedway CC Speedway Home Page is a 1/4 mile high banked asphalt "bull-ring". I just recently saw a press release announcing the sale to a San Antonio businesswoman who's actively trying to bolster local stock car racing in central Texas Texas Speedzone - Corpus Christi Speedway Changes Hands (this link is to a local texas racing forum that covers most types of auto racing in Texas)
  • Texas Motor Speedway Texas Motor Speedway yes THAT Texas Motor Speedway. although we personally never made the necessary changes to our car to be able to compete at TMS with our ROMCO brothers (extra body bracing to withstand the higher speeds), it was an annual deal for the ROMCO SLMs to be the "opening act" on IRL/CTS weekend at TMS. an interesting bit of trivia associated with ROMCO's first race at TMS: in testing to understand what changes would be required to the cars to enable them to safely run at this track, Greg Davidson, longtime short track racer from Houston, was clocked at 192mps on the front straight in his ROMCO SLM .. among other things, one of the requirements for the SLM's to run TMS was they had to run restrictor plates! they were finally able to slow these beasts down to 145mph on the straight.
there's a number of other tracks within a couple hour driving radius that are dirt tracks .. but we never raced on dirt (intentionally)

here's a picture of my son driving our SLM taken at Houston in 2005. he's partial to #61 since it's the number my brother had in NASCAR.

Re: Your Local Track

Alright, a shoutout to the local tracks.

I haven't been to any here in Florida, but back up in New England there are some gems.

http://www.staffordspeedway.com - Stafford Springs, CT. Jack Arute's Stafford Motor Speedway. Congratulations to Ryan Posocco out of Stafford Springs, CT who became Stafford's all time late model victory leader last night.

Oxford Plains Speedway - Oxford, ME. Oxford Plains Speedway, My personal favorite. New England hero Kevin Lepage can still be seen here, and Texas Terry Labonte appeared in last Sunday night's TD banknorth 250. Also home to some great Summer Series Runnin Rebel and Sport Truck racing.

http://www.leeusaspeedway.com - Lee, NH. Lee USA Speedway, the fastest 3/8 mile high bank around. The Whelen All American Series and Small Block Super Mods are the best ticket here

Star Speedway - NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, racing every Saturday night. - Hudson, NH. Home of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series. Also pretty close to the New England Dragway.

Sugar Hill Speedway - Weare, NH. The biggest variety of motorsports in New England and stomping grounds for the future of NASCAR.

We New Englanders love our racing. The local track is the best place to be. Glad I'll be back there soon.

Star Speedway? Holy Cow! I thought that was long gone! Heard that was more like demolition derby than racing. Never been.

I'd say I'm smack in the middle of Star and NE Dragway.

when we had to go to the ABC body for '05 we had our choice of bodies, but decided on the indian because there were already too many chevies, and we didn't want to go a 3rd season in a ford body with GM power (did get lots of 2nd looks, though) and didn't like the dodges. turns out there was only 1 other pontiac that year. 'course, without the decals it's pretty hard to tell the makes apart even though the front bumper cover is different on each.
