Not always. He used to not commend his team. I can give a specific example. It's older, but it will do. In 1999 at the Kmart 400 in Michigan ol Gordo finished 2nd to DJ. DJ dominated a caution free race. When they approached Gordo after the race, he whined and complained about there being no cautions, and said "my crew was just horrible in the pits". No, we had a good run, he whined and cried and blamed his crew. This was a good day. I've heard worse on his bad days. Like I said, that's the way he used to be. Junior just expects the best out of his crew. I don't agree with him saying what he said, but that's the way he is right now. Plus it may be the pressure of being expected to do great things.

Smokey I know you love Tony and as I have posted many, many times I believe that Tony is a great driver but there just isn't room at 150 plus MPH to react with anger. He has been down that road to mant times. Is he the only one ??? Absolutely not and I hate it when any of them retaliate in that manner (Carl Edwards). If these drivers cannot curb their anger themselves then NA$CAR needs to step in and propose stiffer penalties. The reality is that a great driver (Tony) can overcome a 1 lap penalty in a 500 mile race. Tony took out an innocent bystander with his actions and that just isn't fair and it isn't "a racin' deal". Imagine what it would be like if we all drove with the anger in us that he has when things don't go his way. The highways would be litered with bodies. Our penalties for C&N driving are stiffer than NA$CAR penalties.

How would it go if I got in the car and drove?? Probably better since I feel I have better control of my anger. My road rage consists of sitting on my horn and showing the other driver what I think their IQ is.

Please don't hate me Smokey. I just don't care for Tony's attitude. Other than that he is probably a nice guy.

When things go from so good to so bad so quick, peolpe say things that they probably would not if they had time to think (believe me, I've been married) and in Juniors defense they put that camera right in his face immediately after getting out of his car.

I agree. Two consecutive 43rd place finishes can frustrate anyone. With a little time to cool off, Jr. may have chosen his words better.

Ross I would personally like to thank you for starting this forum, but my 11 year old daughter doesn't like it so much it seems that I'm on the computer more than she is, but thats OK I'm the MAMA. HA HA HA. Anyway thanks for giving me some one to talk to about my passion. I only have 2 or 3 people around me who like nascar as much as I do, and this just makes my days complete.

I love DALE JR, but I agree with you that was harsh on his team. I don't think it was his teams fault, wasn't it Blaney who spun him out, and that why he didn't finish the race? He went from 25 to the top 5 didn't he? His car seemed to be OK to me. Tell me if I'm wrong.

My guess is the reason he didn't finish the race was because there was no possible way for him to gain any more points than he had at that moment in the race. When you are 37 laps down and there are only 30 laps to go and the next closet opponent to you is 3 laps down .... then you cannot possibly gain on him. No point in staying out there for nothing.

I don't want to go on a rant here, but...

Here is my take on the current state of Tony:

I'm finding the commonality between Stewart and Earnhardt, the Senior, seems to be growing day by day. I believe the Tony's PR people finally figured out the being a villain ain't all bad, and today's crop of vanilla racers need a viable villain.

Jeffie-Pooh could be consistently good but he made a horrible villain.
The Brother's Busch aren't consistent enough to be good villains and their youthful looks go against them

Tony on the other hand is consistently good and will make NASCAR the person it sorely needs, a good villain, ala WWF.

Earnhardt managed to do this and pull it off well, but it was the NASCAR side of him. Like Tony, Dale didn't care for the PR, media side of the sport. All he wanted to do was race.

Dale, the Elder also didn't race to get points, he raced to win. He wasn't adverse at all to pushing someone out of the way if he wanted a position.(witness the video link I posted, IRT he and Rusty at Talladega) Tony was so concerned about the image of "points racing," that when he won his first championship, he and Zippy got into a number of publicized arguments on "big picture race strategy."

Like Tony, Earnhardt was prone to say exactly what was on his mind whenever a microphone was shoved in his face. (One of Dale's most priceless quotes was after he won one of the Twin 125's in 1999. "Bill France Senior would roll over in his grave if he could see what Bill Junior has turned NASCAR into!")

Both Tony and Dale have been know to be quietly generous. It's been reported that Tony has given at least a couple million dollars to Kyle's Victory Junction Gang, but I can find no evidence of any "Photo Ops" or other PR photos have been published. Kyle has also said that several drivers, including Stewart have been involved in the actual construction of the Camp.
Dale gave a whole lot of money to the Kannopolis school system and library. He also made several unpublicized personal appearances at the schools and pushed kids to complete school. You have to dig hard to find reports of this being done.

Both Dale and Tony disdain the spotlight and are very private people. This is a tough thing to pull off now because the media train is a lot longer than it was ten years ago. Dale and Teresa were never socialites and stayed to themselves.
Tony left the Lake Norman crowd a couple years ago and quietly bought a farm just SE of Columbus, IN and retires back there between races. I'm sure that the fact that this site is only a couple hours away from his other love, Eldora Speedway, figures into the equation, too.

I believe Tony and NASCAR have determined that NASCAR currently needs someone who is consistently capable of winning but who can bring people to the sport just to see if he can be beat. Someone who fans can not be ambivalent about; they either love him or hate him. Someone who can be polarizing. Tony certainly, at the moment, fills that bill.

Feel manipulated? <g>

Granny, Granny, Granny...try this (this is waht I do)
*Right click on your Norton icon down on your taskbar...
*Click on DISABLE INTERNET SECURITY...
*A box will pop up, pick an amount of time (I usually turn it off for 4 hours)so it will come back on automatically.

This will allow your computer to communicate with other websites...like Smiley Central & do the download. It should also speed things up a bit for you.

Hope this helps
