NASCAR not set against split screen

Ramsey Poston, NASCAR's managing director for corporate communications, touched off strong reaction on internet message board with a quote in the Long Island (N.Y.) Press about NASCAR’s opinion of the "side by side" approach ABC/ESPN uses with commercials on Indy Racing League races.
"We've looked at a lot of options to enhance the fan/viewer experience but feel that a split-screen presentation of ads and racing serves neither the fan nor advertiser," Poston told the newspaper.
On Friday, Poston said he didn't mean for his comment to come off as though he was speaking for the fans.
"We are open to it, if there is a better way of presenting it," he said. “But we haven't seen an idea that we think would work both the advertisers and fans."
On its IRL broadcasts, ABC/ESPN present commercials with audio on part of the screen while showing an image from the track, with no sound, on another part. The method has produced no appreciable gain in IRL ratings for ABC/ESPN, however. Advertisers pay considerably higher rates for ads on NASCAR telecasts.

"Is this plain old bull sh*t?" Hmmm...
If it looks like a duck, if it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, then...

I have an idea that NASCAR should really love! Let's try this: Have three hours of commercials and have three and four minutes race breaks between the commercial every 15-20 minutes?

Brian! Are you listening, brother??? Can I get an "Amen" from NASCAR on this one?

It's funny that he says the split screen method serves neither the fans nor the advertisers, yet the whole purpose of implementing the method was exactly that--to try to serve both the fans and the advertisers.

Another example of corporate flim-flam, NAS. Talk a lot and say absolutely nothing.

No appreciable gain in IRL ratings...hmmm. Maybe it's because it's the IRL? Comparing NASCAR to the IRL at least in TV ratings is dumbfounding especially coming from someone in NASCAR. It sounds to me like a CYA statement. And of course adverstisers pay higher rates for ads, MORE PEOPLE WATCH THEM. Just come out and say it or I will. What Mr. Poston meant was: We don't want the advertisers who pay the TV companies, who pay us to be upset and cut off the money. We really don't care what the viewers want in relationship to this because the advertisers' money means more to us and the fans/viewers are going to watch regardless. Which of course just leads to a larger dollar amount on our next network deal!
