Best NASCAR Books

Hi, all. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good NASCAR-related books. Anything would be good, but specifically some funny memoirs from old drivers would be especially appreciated. Not sure how many of you are wrasslin fans, but something along the like of the Mick Foley or Ric Flair books, if you've read them. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Can I ever!!

"Forty Years of Stock Car Racing, Vol's I, II, III, IV, V" 1989, Greg Fielden, Galfield Press
"The Stock Car Racing Encylopedia", 1997, Peter Golenbock and Greg Fielden, Macmillan Press
"Stock Car Racing U.S.A." Jim Hunter, (The same Jim Hunter who was President of Darlington and is no V.P. of Communications for NASCAR), Dodd, Mead & Co, 1973
Any "Official NASCAR Preview and Press Guide"
Golenbock wrote another book which was pretty intertaining. It dwelled on the personalities of NASCAR and should be found in any decent-sized library.
The Bio on Dale Earnhardt Sr was pretty good and, from what I know, pretty factual
DO NOT waste your money on Jr's "Driver #8" It's written for the lowest common denominator of race fan.

Hope this helps

Re: Best NASCAR Books

I know DW is not the fav of this board, nor is he my fav, but my wife checked out from the local liabrary: a lifetime going in circles.

once you got reading it I couldn't it down, tons of stories about jr, johnson, and other greats.
if half the stories are true it's a wonder DW is alive today.

I have book here called tradin paint, raceway rookies and royalty.

I never made it past the part where it says the last place guy can score more point then the winner because you get 5 pts for each lap lead.

geeessse do some research!

I have also read several books on dale SR. they were all good.
sr. was a wild one in his younger days.

I read it. A very interesting read with, as you say, lots of personal experiences and anecdotes. However, I found his views of his own behaviour kind of stilted.

Are you sure they weren't talking about the point system NASCAR used in...? '72-'73 or '73-'74, or something like that? I have tried to get a copy of those rules but they have vanished off the face of the earth?
Then NASCAR awarded points based on laps led, laps completed, the length of the race and number of entries. I believe the same people who wrote these particular rules went on to write the US Tax Code.
Seriously, I have had multiple NASCAR people from that era attempt to explain those rules to me and never have I had the same explanation twice.

Thanks, Bob and Oncea3 for the info! I"ll look for that DW book and some of those other ones. I have a Dale Earnhardt book but I haven't had time to read it yet. When I do, I think I'll try some trivia on you guys!

I just found another one, Lefty. Try Amazon.com and look up "Stock Car Confidential" by Peter Golenbock. I read the excerpt and it read pretty well.

Re: Best NASCAR Books

Benny parsons once talked about the book "stoker ace" not the movie but a book. I believe it was by or about a high in nascar person, oe maybe it was curtis turner. but alot of stuff from the movie was real life experiences . I was never able to find the book at a reasonible price.

if you want just racing type stories(untrue) the series "southern running" were good 4 book set, stories about moonshine to stockcars.
also and book called dirt track summer was good.

if you happen to find stoker ace, let me know how it is, I'd still like to read it.

Re: Best NASCAR Books

Hey thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I think I may start with DW's book (sounds like the sort of thing I was thirsting for) and then move on to "Stock Car Confidential" and some of the more encyclopedia-esque entries.

Thanks again, and make sure you keep 'em coming, okay?

You're very welcome, Lefty. I warms the teacher in me when I see people who read for pleasure. Knowledge is something that can NEVER be taken away.
