Once qualifying is over, the field is set by merging the highest ranked 35 teams in the owner standings with the fastest seven cars not in those 35 positions, in the order of their qualifying speeds. The 43rd position is reserved for a former champion, provided he is not already qualified and satisfies the rulebook's criteria. If unused by a former champion, it goes to the next fastest car in qualifying. The lone exception is the Daytona 500, which uses qualifying and two 150-mile races to determine the field.

Re: qualifying

Hi wardfan and everyone, I believe it's just a random draw, there's no favortism for the points leaders or anyone else.

I read that crap every week at the top of the line up. And for the life of me, I still can't figure out what it exactly means.

Re: qualifying

the top 35 from the year before still get a garentee for the first 4-5 races, including daytona, but thats just "a" spot one where that spot is in the field

Re: qualifying

The whole idea of giving the top 35 a free pass is yet another $$$ deal from NASCAR. So if three or more drivers in the top 10 can't get a good enough qualifying run they are still in but some poor schnook who has better speed but not enough gets booted out. How bad would it be if Gordo, Earnhardt, Johnson, Biffle or whoever didn't make the cut?? Financially it would be devastating to NASCAR. What about Elliott getting into the NHIS on the past champion spot. Bull crap !!! He didn't run fast enough to qualify but he gets to bump out the least fastest driver that did make it in.

Once again NASCAR justice at work ... for their own financial gains.

I like Bill, with his champions provisional, he bumped out Teddy Christopher. I really wanted to see Ted in the show.

Re: qualifying

I think the top 35 in points being quaranteed a spot bogus. Hell if say a Gordon or Earnhardt missed the race TV will probably spend more time talking about that and never show the car that beat them out. How are new teams suppose to get off the ground if they are basically playing against a stacked deck. If a car can qualify on speed they should get to run. I think all positions should be on speed, no provisionals.
