Let them merge. Then it'll be just like it was prior to the split, except this time DO NOT let the team owners run the show. That's what ruined CART the last time. Ganassi and Penske tried to turn the Series into their personal playground.
An IRL/CART series needs a STRONG series director, ala Bill France Sr., Judge "Mountain" Landis, or maybe even God (is he/she even a race fan?) to run the show with an iron fist.
Tony George missed the boat, in my opinion when they split. I was REALLY hoping they'd dump those rear-engined technological nightmarish weedwhackers-on-steroids and run nothing but front-engined USAC Silver Crown stock-block cars in the IRL and especially the Indy 500.
If they merge, the comparision between them and NASCAR is apple/oranges. Plus, NASCAR has a 50 year head start; they'll eat into the NASCAR fan base only minimally.
