I just got back in and I find this!!?? Thanks for making my day! <g>

What do I think of it? Well, I steadfastly refuse to refer to the Firecracker 400 as the Pepsi 400, The World 600 will NEVER be the Lowes 600, and it will ALWAYS be held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. In 1972 I made a concession and changed my calling the Grand National Series to the Winston Cup, but I never felt good about it, but I was a lot younger, less set in my ways, and thought almost all change was for the best. (I also wore polyester, bell-bottoms, and wore my hair in either a 'fro or had a ponytail. So, go figure)

The Pacers will forever play in The Hoosier Dome, not the RCA Dome, or whatever they call it now.

Does that give you an idea of my feelings about IRP? <g> Com'on Corporate America, give us back our sports!!!

I neglected to expand my traditional beliefs. The Brickyard will be The Brickyard 400 and not Some-Insurance-Company 400" until I go Tango Uniform. The NASCAR race held over Labour Day will continue to be call, by me, the Southern 500, whether they hold it in its rightful place of Darlington, or if they run it out on the Left Coast at Michigan West.

This topic touched a nerve with me. I'm originally from just north of Indy (Anderson) and have been to IRP many, many times over the years. Just a name change irritates me no end.

Do they still run at Art Zip's Speedrome there in Indy?

Re: Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP) is gone....

Charolotte Motor Speedway will never be called Lowes...the only thing thay accomplished by changing the name is that I will never patronize Lowes. Same for the IRP and all of the other corporate name changing etc. The Boards of Governors just don't seem to comprehend that TRADITION rules a the racetracks and the condecending habit of putting you name on the track serves only to alienate those of us who resent tradition-bashing...like we have all talked about how Dale Earnhardt Sr has won seven NEXTEL cup championships!! (by-the-way, another definition for condecending is a prison inmate coming down a flight of stairs...couldn't help that, sorry.)

IRP is another example of Brian allowing havoc to reek throughout...hail the almighty dollar!! After reading some of the above responses, I remain in Bob Tanners shadow...ya just gotta like that guy...

Wampinrock As you might expect, I agree with your feelings about NASCAR tradition and the fallacy of corporate sponsorship. Racing might make more money with them but, as a fan, I sure don't have to agree with it. As we say back in Indiana; Oy Vey!

As much as I would love to trace all things back, including the common cold and the recent drop in the DOW to Brian France, this is one that he is inocent of. IRP is wholey owned by the National Hot Rod Association (or it was the last time I heard). NHRA is the one whose name is on the dotted line IRT the O'Reilly sellout.

Re: Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP) is gone....

Thanks for the up-date, Bob, but sometimes I don't like being confused witht he facts...I still don't like Brian's tactics...I know that he is probably not completely guilty of all of the things racing, I just think he is the largest and most convient target for those things that change my faith in the traditional and long-standing "flavor" of NASCAR...not-withstanding that he is getting so damn super-rich that jealousy plays a role as well. Never have trusted the big corportational "roll over the customer" attitudes...(big oil, big banks etc.)

Any of you old enough to remember a movie called Roller Ball? It told the story of how corporations world-wide pitted roller skater teams agains each other, often to the death. The theme was that corporations, not nations, were indeed ruling the world. Little did I realize, those many years ago, how really true that would become! Look at us now! Lowe's Motorspeedway indeed. It bothers me greatly that the younger generation will really not know the difference...kinda like many on the road today really do not comprehend the serious damage they are contributing to while owning and driving the off-shore manufactured vehicle (regardless if it was assembled in the USA or not!)

OK, stepped off the soap box...; next...
