Should injured Drivers compete?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Ricky Rudd once had to duct tape his swollen eyes open to race. Davey Allison, driving with a broken hand, had to glue Velcro onto his cast and the steering wheel so he could grip it. Dale Earnhardt raced with a broken sternum and Darrell Waltrip did it with a broken leg. Even safety-conscious Jeff Burton admits to once racing while battling a bout of vertigo.

Here is a NASCAR article I read today...and it begs the question...what is "too injured to compete"...I mean a guy suffering vertigo behind the wheel of car...is that even safe for him and others?

Your talking about two different eras in racing. I'm not being a smart$@#. Waltrip, Earnhardt, and Rudd were racers... that was there life... racing. The only thing that could keep them out of those cars was death. It was be in the car that's it..... Today it's more about money and sponsorship than racing. Winning the title to please the money spenders. Today is it to much...yes.... Back then no.

How many times do people drive under the influence ?? Race car drivers are going to do the same when their job depends on them being there for the sponsor. This was a subject that was talked about on the Speed channel this weekend. It will be a subject that has a variety of answers depending on the point of view. The major point of view will be "What constitutes an injury that should keep you out of the car?" Just as drunk has a different meaning from person to person ... so will "What is an injury."

Still, there should be a standard...a guideline...bad enough the driver puts his life in danger...he is also putting everyone else at risk...Not t ohave a standard opens the sport up to lawsuites left and right when something goes wrong...I am sure sponsers do not want to be associated with a driver who goes onto the speedway and kills another driver because he was too injured to handle the car he was driving...

Totally agree with you Quality88. Tony got in the car for the points then got out. I believe he had to be cleared by a doctor to get in the car anyway. (let me know if I'm wrong on this).

I believe he had to be cleared. Don't quote me though. Ever since Jr admitted to driving with a concusion, Nascar has had a fit with drivers driving injured. They flat out said they would have examinations they would have to pass before they could race.( This is post wreck/injury) Hence why Kahne was in the hot seat for getting back in his car before he was cleared after his little wreck.

I'm pretty sure you're right about getting cleared. Any progress on getting that satellite dish? Or the marrying thing? (don't freak out, I remembered that from another thread). I've seen some apartments around here that have dishes.

Well, Nascar, Nascar, Tony Stewart and Smoke are cool (just in case Ross peeks in here)why stress so heavy? Now why did I say that. I understand the stress thing. What if it doesn't work? Well, as long as you don't buy a house, it's easier to separate if it doesn't work. I did the marrying thing once and it didn't work. But we both had our own stuff and just separated and took our stuf.

Kinda like Talladega and Daytona, so many decisions and the wrong one could put you in the back or the big one. Then again...the right one could put you in victory lane with a big payoff

Listen to Grandma, don't enter the race if you don't believe you will win. Been there done that.
