Good Job, Mate!!!

How about Marcus Ambrose's making the show in Tad Geschickter's and Brad Daugherty's JTG Racing's first attempt? He didn't just squeak by to get in, either. He qualified somewhere in the 20's! This is the team which is coming full time to Cup next season (Looks like Cup will need some new teams).

Maybe the Woods Brothers should work on making some sort of deal with Yates? What they're doing isn't getting the job done.

I'm looking forward to seeing Marcus completely all 200 laps tomorrow. Maybe they'll have some shrimp on the barbie (do they do that in Tazmania, Clutch? Or do they just drink Fosters or Cascade beer?)

Dont know what the local nectar is in Tazzie....but I'm sure that a few bottles have been downed in his honor today

Outstanding to qualify 24th in their 1st attempt. Hope they have a good race........he hasnt exactly excelled on ovals yet which is totally different from his agressive style on a road course.......should be interesting

Re: Good Job, Mate!!!

you just have to feel bad for the Woods....

"This is fairly spectacular considering the trouble we had [Friday]," Ambrose said. "We did a whole two laps [Friday] and didn't know what to do with the car. We're a start-up team, and we made it in [Saturday]. This feels like my first genuine Cup start. I feel like we have climbed Mount Everest after [Friday's] effort. We had less than seven minutes on the racetrack, and here we are, we qualified."
Meanwhile, the Wood Brothers packed up, another missed race putting them ever further behind in owner points. Eddie Wood could only shake his head. "Just another chapter in the book, man," he said.

Does make you wonder about their equipment.... I mean Ambrose couldn't qualify on an oval in their car, however, Indy is not your typical oval.

The #21 DID qualify for the race! I believe that he was 42th fastest. However the silly, stupid and ridiculous infernal Champions Provisional did him in again.

Letting a guy race simply because he won a championship over a decade ago is just... My vocabulary isn't adequate to articulate the dislike I have the the absurd concept of "Provisionals" and other guaranteed starting positions.

Marcus Ambrose's will be in car #147. Is this the first time a "three digit" number has been used in a NASCAR race. I don't recall seeing one in the past.

I think the car number on the side will actually be 47... I can't remember the deal as to why they are listed with the third digit, but in the race only 47 will be on the car.

Far from the first time. It was done many times before. For example, 54 years ago, on 7/30/54, Dave Terrell run a #126 at the NASCAR race in Morristown, NJ. Fred Starr finished last in that race driving #4-X. When Buck Baker drove the Kiekhoeffer Chryslers he drove a four digit number, 300B.

Tell me more... It had #47 when he qualified it and it's listed as #47 one the list of Cup teams. Maybe it's got a #1 before the 47 in order to distinguish it as a part-time team?

I was going by the list after qualifing on NASCAR.com. They show him as car# 147. As Quality88 pointed out by race time NASCAR will allow him to use car# 47.

Hi Bob!

NASCAR has only allowed 2-digit car numbers for a long time, but has kept using 3-digit "entry numbers" for internal purposes. NASCAR.com has been using those entry numbers rather than car numbers for a few years now.

If two part-time teams want to use the same car number, they will be assigned, for example, entry #147 and #247. If only one team enters a race, it can use car number 47, but if both enter the same race, the one that requested the number first (#147) retains the number 47 and the other has to pick a different car number for the race.

I thought that it was something like that. I knew that NASCAR stopped using numbers of more than two digits back in 1958 or 59 (Sorry, don't remember which year it was...I've slept since then).

Do you write for MS1? If so, care to share your by-line with us?

Thanks for the info. We need all the help we can get in this humble little group.

Good afternoon, "old" friend!

(Of course, by "old", I mean "long-time"!...)

I am Motorsports One... If I didn't write for it, there wouldn't be a Motorsports One.

If you saw qualifying for the Nationwide Series race in Chicagoland, Kevin Lepage ran a #43 car, but was really entered as the #55 team of Jimmy Means. But because Robby Gordon was also entered in that race and had applied for the number 55 before Means did, Lepage had to change his car number. The car was actually prepared by Front Row Motorsports and they used the same number decals as the ones used on the #34 Cup car.
