Stewart Locks In Car, Sponsorships

NASCAR driver and now team co-owner Tony Stewart has secured a car and several sponsors for next season, 6News' Sports Director Dave Furst reported. Next season will be the Columbus, Ind. native's first season as co-owner of Stewart HAAS racing. Stewart will drive the 14 car made famous by his racing hero, A.J. Foyt, Furst reported. He'll also drive Chevrolets sponsored by Old Spice and Office Depot. -- IndyChannel.com

Congratulations for the $500 you just earned for having a photo-op with your Oakley tee-shirt, Tony.

No surprose about the sponsors. That was basically what the deal was all about, in the first place.

#14. Excellent choice of numbers, Smoke. Carrying on a fine tradition. I like it.

I like it too. It'll be interesting to see what the paint schemes look like.

Also this...

HAAS Applies to Trademark No. 14, Presumably for Stewart

Ditto on the sponsor thing. Have sense here that TS essentially bringing Office Depot and Old Spice is pretty much close to earning his 50% ownership award/offer/position. See chances Haas could have done it or something close to it without TS as something approaching zero. In less tight economic times, might have given Haas more likelihood, but that is not the present state of affairs. Now the Haas side of the deal has to deliver.

Will TS always be a "depot" guy?

Never really gave comparative thought here of/about TS and AJ. Till just a short bit ago. While many thought AJ a real "flamer" with regards to his temper/people skills/patience/immaturity, here his "flaming" out of race car personality was enjoyed/appreciated. There's a lot about the the two that have similarities. While cannot here yet see the two as equally successful, in fairness TS' motorsports career is in comparative infant stage, am likely to view TS' efforts going forward from a somewhat different perspective.

One thing always felt here - TS can flat out race most anything when he's a mind to.

(1) Carol Chaning will always be Dolly Levi, Sean Connery will always be James Bond and Peter Sellars will always be Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Probablt "Depot" will be associated with TS for a few years to come.

(2) because of the money they race for now, and the quick accumulation of wealth, I think Smoke is on a track close to that which A.J. was on at this stage of his career, IF you throw out the Grand Prix successes.

(3) Another thing where he and A.J enjoy commonality.

Now see there is the one thing that I cannot/have not and likely/hopefully will never factor in to our/a cornerstone of appreciation for/of a motorsport competitors success --- $ gained/appreciated/won. Oh we know all the reasons/arguments of how this is some form of oblique or associative measure, but dang it is so far from the heart of the matter (Eagles/Don Henley song - and not a bad one).

Guess been way too close to the people aspect of the sport to appreciate the more "today" value of monetary measurement. Maybe someday, but hoping for never.

Sorry, Old Buddy. But the monetary aspect can't be ignored if you have a proclivity to compare business successes.

For example, do you have any idea how much [more] Richard Petty would be worth today IF he were running the pruses, and getting the sponsorship money in the 60's and 70's that they get currently? I can't but the concept boggles my mind.

"can't be ignored if you have a proclivity to compare business successes" - hear ya and we KNOW the ever increasing value of this amongst many and applied to much. Neither ignore or have the proclivity (thankfully as it relates to motorsports at least) here.

Been just SO close and directly involved with the individual humans that compete. Have shared face to face their tears, joys, desires, etc. THEY do not typcially include in their perdominant initial and final measures of self the $$. Notice the allowance for the "in between" thing that many will wander/enjoy/be lost within for some period.

And no, don't have clue to RP's comparative monetary value. Enjoy most that it has absolutely nothing to do with our appreciation of the racer he was. And it never will. He could be a pauper as measured in either today or yesterdays money, it just would not matter. Not here. Ever. To any extent.

Assuming that is in reference to enjoying "Racing" ..... there is no sin in being labeled that way.

Not here <whew!>. However, on a forum I was involved in three years ago (I'm persona non grata there now), I was challenged as to the authenticity of my being a fan. I remember distinctly one person there writing, "What a cop out! You can't be a NASCAR fan unless you have a favorite driver to cheer for!"

That little bit of narrow minded sheer stupidity will stay with me for a long time.

I'm with you. one thing that truly incenses me is stupidity. but, a rage followed by a short break for one's favorite beverage and pastime and it's
time to dump that load of aggravation where it'll never see the light of day again.

speaking of dumping, I'm reminded of the Law of the Garbage Truck:
One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly.

So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? That guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' That is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment.

As their garbage piles up they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!
