Yeley and the 96 team ...cheaters?

so this is why there were so late out of inspection

OLIET, Ill. - J.J. Yeley was with the No. 96 Toyota in the inspection bay long after the other 42 Sprint Cup cars were lined up on pit road waiting for the start of the LifeLock.com 400.

NASCAR officials at Chicagoland Speedway discovered two pseudo water bottles filled with 15 lbs of lead in the No. 96 during inspection — one of the oldest tricks to lighten up a car outside the rulebook.

Yeley and his team were released shortly before the parade laps began. They were given a pass-through penalty during the first lap of the race, putting them a lap down.
The No. 96 Hall of Fame Racing team came into this weekend's event 38th in the owner's standings. Further penalties could be forthcoming, according to one NASCAR source.

Re: Yeley and the 96 team ...cheaters?

Well I didnt see the whole race so I guess most of you know that........

UPDATE: After the race, NASCAR met with Hall of Fame racing co-owner Tom Garfinkel and apparently cleared the team of any wrongdoing. “NASCAR had reason to believe we were doing something we shouldn’t have been doing – and we weren’t doing it,” Garfinkel said. “But they had sufficient reason to believe that because of some mistakes in procedure that we made.” Yeley said that each week, his team uses a drink system that requires crew members to put a cold water bag into the car before the race. If they put it in early, it gets too hot and isn’t drinkable. But NASCAR apparently felt something was amiss, and ran the car through inspection both with and without the water bag to address weight concerns. Officials apparently suspected that the #96 team had gone to the old trick of putting lead in the water bag to make extra weight. After the race, Pemberton said the team had “served our penalties. We’re done with them,” he said. “We’re comfortable with that team and we feel like they weren’t trying to pull the wool over our eyes.”(

well that is good news. JJ needs all the points he can get. Sucks though that Nascar after the fact says there was no wrong doing. WTF Nascar? WTF?

Considering that they gave him a pass through at the drop of the green, it doesn't seem to matter much if they clear them now.

Just another way for the powers that be to levy fines of money or points to a team just to let all know who can put the hammer down on anybody at any time. "We" rule and you dont.

Which is the way most officiating at most local tracks I'm familiar with operate. When NA__AR does it, it's just more visible.

So true Bob. But with Nascar its seen on an international level. They have to look like they are doing something somewhere to somebody. It does suck having to see all this go down. At times it sure does look like favorites are being played, and if your in the click you dont have to worry about sanctions. Nascar dont do that, right?

Kind of like our Imperial Government, no? NA__AR makes massive changes to the car, which helps virtually no one, but boy! Does NA__AR "look" powerful and "concerned!

Re: Yeley and the 96 team ...cheaters?

Been covered on here before...no they weren't taking out lead at the start of the race/pre race. HOWEVER (and NASCAR put out a press release stating this) they were adding and removing items from the car before the race without an offical present - which is the rule. People have got hung up on the "not taking weight out of the car". By taking the drink system out and back in without an offical present they broke the rule. End of story.

After the race NASCAR stated they thought the team did not have intentions of cheating by taking out weight...but they did not follow the rules before the race and the start at the back and the pass thru after green was justified. But because they were not taking out weight no further actions on NASCAR's part would be taken.

IE - they did something they weren't supposed to and we made them start at the back and do a pass thru...now we're even. If they had been taking out weight there would have been penalties/fines after the race. That was not the case.
