Crew chief's utterance costs him, driver and team owner

NASCAR fined Chad Walter, crew chief for JR Motorsports' No. 5 Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series, $10,000 for the use of improper language during the live ABC broadcast of last weekend's race at New Hampshire. Team owner Rick Hendrick was also penalized 25 owner points for the infraction and driver Landon Cassill was docked 25 driver points. -- Charlotte Observer

The reporters need to lay off the 'mic-in-the-face' tactics they keep using. They don't give people time to cool down before bombarding them with annoying questions. Ask Tony Stewart if he likes it.

Like it or not, it is very unlikely that it will change. They may side step around Tony for a while but other than him I'm sure they (the media) will find 10 different ways to ask the same question even if they don't get the answer they want.

Re: Crew chief's utterance costs him, driver and team owner

do the races or even sporting events really have to be broadcast in actual live time? Does it really matter if lets say they delayed the actual broadcast a minute behind?
If it's such an issue with language during a broadcast. That minute delay gives an engineer a little bit of time to catch a slip.

The network stations (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX) run delayed broadcast. They cover their a$$es, because they are under more scrutiny, however, ESPN is on cable and cable is under far less scrutiny, and because so, ESPN won't delay the broadcast any in order to catch and bleep utterances of foul nature.

What-ever happened to NASCAR wanting to 'show the emotion'? Well guess what? Someone ticked off because their car got wrecked and happens to let slip "Shit happens" is a show of emotions.

A show of emotions is acceptable as long as it is family friendly

Would throwing a helmet at another driver be more acceptable?

Yes if it's at his car, No if it's at him.

Re: Crew chief's utterance costs him, driver and team owner

Perhaps it would behoove NASCAR to supplement the Rule Book with an authoritative list of permissible demonstrations of emotions, as the drivers and crew seem to be misunderstanding the concept that NASCAR has in mind.

Now you've done it. You've brought the mythical NASCAR Rule Book into the discussion. Knowing NASCAR like we all do, I'd bet by the time they got done writing down all those rules and explanations, we're talking half of Oregon's forests!!! And no normal person has access to them! I'd much rather ESPN pony up $20K to pay some "engineer" to scrub the audio...

I'd much rather see ESPN pay this guy's fine..... The guy said a curse word, last I checked, this is not a crime and most of us use them everyday! The foul was this curse word was broadcast over the air to millions of children who have never heard such an awful thing and may never be the same! BUT ESPN broadcast it....not the guy who said it.
Make the networks pay the fines and they will surely put a delay on or in the least, let the person interveiwed have a cool down period before they shoved a mike in his face!!

if you want to see and hear what it is really like on a race team ....thats what it's like.
beside go to you local mall and you'll hear ten times has much and ten times worse laungue.

Totally agreed my friend.... however this is a sport and people would rather blame sports figures for their childrens language and actions... rather than take responsibility and be parents and teach their children proper language..... I'll stop there before I perch on the soapbox. I think everyone understands what I'm gettin at.

Re: Crew chief's utterance costs him, driver and team owner

Has anybody seen the hit tv show "Friends"?

Not only the words they say but the content of the material has to be far worse than anything a crew chief or driver could come up with.
