Smoke Does It Again

If only more drivers would "light up" some of these low-buck media hacks like Tony does, I swear, it'd be a much better world.

Today, post-race, Marty Schneider tried to get Stewart to say he blamed Harvick for the wreck which dropped him back in the field. Tony replied something to the effect of, "I haven't seen the replay. I don't know what happened and I don't want to comment."
Undaunted, Marty-Pooh asked the same question a slightly different way. Smoke came back with, "Look, in case you didn't hear me the first time, I haven't seen the replay yet and won't comment. YOU weren't in the car and you don't know what you're talking about."

You go, Tony.

Tony Stewart's Post Race Interview - Infineon

Did that reporter draw the short straw or what?

Tony Stewart obviously does not suffer lame questions asked by reporters.

Hopefully somebody can post it here but basically the question had to do with Kevin Harvick. Stewart told him he had not seen the tape so wouldn't comment. The reporter then asks a follow up question about a previous incident with Harvick again. Stewart tells him he's (the reporter) not in the car so he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I think they quickly cut to another driver interview at that point. I'm sure NASCAR will have Stewart report to the principal's office.

My recollection of the incident in no way gives the interaction justice. If you've not seen it, watch it on your tivo or it'll probably end up on youtube as well.

Great race! I really thought Stewart was going to get a 2nd place finish, then I thought Jeff Gordon might pull a rabbit out of his hat but I guess he decided to play it cool and go with a 3rd place finish instead of taking a chance and ending up back around a 15th.

I don't even like Tony, but I'm beginning too. I'd love for him to be our President or at the very least the Whitehouse Press Secretary or what ever it's called.

Yep !!! As much as I don't care for Tony's attitude I gotta give him kudos for this one. Made Marty look pretty stupid.

Re: Smoke Does It Again

In recollection I think Schneider was referring to this being the "second time this season that Harvick has cost Stewart a good finish."

In all fairness to Schneider (whom I dislike as much as any media/TV hack except for Bill Weber) the first time he asked the question, I thought it did have some legitimacy. But Stewart responded that he did not want to comment and 'Ol Marty just plowed right on, in his freshman journalist fashion and Smoke let him have it, right between his beady little eyes.

Tony doesn't suffer amateur journalism well, and I don't think that he should have to.

Just my opinion...

Re: Smoke Does It Again

Did ya catch Kyle's comment just before they went off the air? Said they "should probably send some medics down to Marty"...

methinks Mr Schneider needs to retake Interviewing 101 and pay special attention to the "listen to the answer" part.

Tony had fire in his eyes before the first on air question was mouthed and it was directed at that mediot... Then he had the gall to start trying to manufacture a rivalry (has he not been paying attention to anything this year? Kevin and Tony are buds - they work out their problems off camera; Tony even drives for Kevin occasionally!)

Re: Smoke Does It Again

I've seen people on other forums bashing Tony for his 'rudeness' during that interview... I thought it was great!

Seriously, if they want an untrained hack out there asking questions of the drivers post race, give me the microphone... at least I could possibly come up with some more intelligent questions.

My dislike for Marty Schneider goes back to last year, when he shared SIRIUS' morning NASCAR channel's show with David Poole. He proved over and over that he knows very little about motorsports but has an eye for the theatrical. He had absolutely no concept of NASCAR history beyond 2001 and is obviously in it because the notoriety of being a media person inflates his ego.

He's a jerk that I rank even lower than DW. (THAT, my friend, is saying a lot!) It would have made my heart soar like an eagle to have seen Tony back him against the hauler and *****-slap him summarily.

well, in Marty's defense .... i hear reporters use this "tactic" almost every day in every sport ..... yes it never fails to make you shake your head that the reporter cant seem to 'get it' .. that the interviewee does not want to talk about a subject ....... but as i said, this sort of exchange happens all the time

i will say, it is very very rare that i actually hear a reporter either only ask a sensitive question once .. or just avoid the subject entirely out of respect for the interviewee ..... i do know that many times the interviewer will know in advance if there are subjects better not brought up or dwelled on ... but all too often that seems to matter little

i only bring this up as i know some of you (Bob) dont follow many other sports so closely so you may not be aware of how common this is

I appreciate it, Simon. To be quite honest, I have given up on just about EVERY sports media type. They all seem to have gone to the Howard Cosell School of interviewing where the object is NOT to GET the news but rather to MAKE the news, and in the process gain notoriety for your journalistic individualism.

Curt Gowdy, Chris Schinkle, Jim McKay, where arth thou?

yes ....... apparently if you make Bobby Knight tell you about his plans for the future it was a wasted interview .... however, if you make him toss a chair off the set during the interview and storm out it is apparently considered a job well done

(my apologies to those that dont get the Bobby Knight reference)
