Haas CNC Racing has both cars confiscated at LMS

NASCAR.COM - Haas CNC Racing has both cars confiscated at LMS - May 24, 2008

Quote:
Haas CNC Racing's two qualified Sprint Cup cars for Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600 were confiscated by NASCAR on Saturday afternoon and taken to its nearby research and development center.

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said the sanctioning body had "an issue with the upper rear wing mounting points of the 66 and 70 cars."

Tharp said the Chevrolets -- the No. 66 driven by Scott Riggs, which qualified in the 13th position and the No. 70 that was qualified in the 43rd position by Johnny Sauter -- had an "altered location of the upper wing mounting point."

According to the article it may be something like Dale Jr got last year for his unapproved rear wing mounting brackets. He lost 100 driver and owner points and the crew chief was fined $100,000 and suspended for seven races.

I initially thought the same thing. But, I think the problem with the #8 last year was the side brackets which the wings mount to. They were mounted OK but the bracket itself was "unapproved." On the Haas/CNC cars I think NASCAR is stating there are problems the way the wing assembly is attached to the deck? (I have read the official NASCAR statement; I can read NASCAR and write NASCAR but sometimes I get lost in the literal translation)

Joe Custer was interviewed on SIRIUS this morning. He says the entire team is confused. He claims (90% of all criminals going in front of a judge claim innocence) the wing mounts haven't changed since the car went through initial tech. The back-up cars have exactly the same type of wing mounts and NA__AR has approved them?

This whole thing is kind of "curious?"

Yeah, that is certainly interesting. I guess we will have to stay tuned.

Re: Haas CNC Racing has both cars confiscated at LMS

Here's what I found on Fox Sports:

Quote:
CONCORD, N.C. - NASCAR officials confiscated both Haas CNC Racing's cars Saturday ahead of this weekend's Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

According to a NASCAR official, both Scott Riggs' No. 66 and Johnny Sauter's No. 70 car had manipulated rear-wing mounts on the deck lid, causing them to not fit properly in the inspection grid.

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said the violation was found as a result of the self-policing by teams in the garage area. "It was brought to our attention, we followed up, we found it," Tharp said.

Riggs had qualified 13th for Sunday's race at Lowe's Motor Speedway while Sauter, who is outside the top 35 in owner points, had to qualify on time and was set to roll off from 43rd place. Although both drivers will be allowed to practice their backup cars and compete in the 400-lap event, they will do so using their backup cars and start from the rear of the field.

NASCAR official Brett Bodine accompanied the confiscation convoy that left the garage for NASCAR's Research and Development Center at 2:20 p.m. Early speculation is the team will be fined a minimum of $100,000 and docked 100 championship points for the infraction.
Sounds like somene in the garage "squealed" .. nobody knows better than the teams when something is "askew" on competitor's cars...

Who wants to bet the narc came from either HMS or RFR. Not saying these two teams are dirty (*cough* yeah right *cough*) but they are the two that seem to complain a lot.

Re: Haas CNC Racing has both cars confiscated at LMS

It was probably Tony Stewart who squealed. If he can get the "value" of the CNC Haas team down to a level that he'd like to pay for the team, Tony will make an offer.

Well I believe it is going to be Haas making the offer not Stewy.
