NASCAR hit hard by obnoxious oil prices

Auto racing is the ultimate in gas-guzzling entertainment. But the prospect of paying $4 a gallon to get to the track has some fans reluctant to start their engines. Ticket sales slipped just as May, the biggest month in motorsports, hit. So track promoters are shifting into high gear to keep the grandstands full, offering all-you-can-eat packages and staging rock concerts. "This is a working man's sport, no matter what picture some people try to paint," said H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president of Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord. "The people most affected by these obnoxious oil prices are the working man." About half the fans who attend the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race, set for Sunday at Wheeler's track, drive from more than 250 miles away, many of them in RVs that can cost $300 or more to fill up. -- Burlington Times News

Re: NASCAR hit hard by obnoxious oil prices

Maybe you should retitled this thread NASCAR fan hit hard by obnoxious oil prices. NASCAR is not bothered by a few cents increase from time to time.

Nascar is affected by the lack of fans showing up because of the gas increase, not everyone lives by a track..

Kentucky's kinda close... Ooops! NA__AR refused to them a race, didn't they, even though they sell out every Cup Lite race and come close with the CTS. My bad.

Texas is about 180 miles from my house and I've been down there 3 times since I moved here. But I doubt I'll go back because it cost too much, when you combine the price of tickets and gas. But, the local dirt track is only 10 miles from my house. It doesn't cost near as much to go there, and quite frankly, the racing is better. Not hard for me to pick which one to go to nowadays.

Besides, your local track actually appreciates your support!

Give me a choice vetween attending a Cup or Cup Lite race, and a local track or an ARCA race and the NASCAR primadonnas lose every time.

As far as I'm concerned, NA__AR has turned Cup into a made-for-TV sport, and is best enjoyed watching from your home and NOT in person.

Re: NASCAR hit hard by obnoxious oil prices

Wish I could get diesel for $4 a gallon .. I paid $4.48 yesterday at Sam's Club. Today everything I saw was $4.55 or more. It's a real pain when you only get 6.5 gallons for 30 bucks!!! And that's what the truckers are paying that deliver your milk and bread to the grocery store .. so who do you think is paying for their fuel?

Now, think about this: how many NA$CAR teams would show up this weekend if they had to pay $8 a gallon for that Sunoco racing gas that they get free?

That's what we've been paying for racing gas ($8/gal) and what we paid at Houston this past weekend... with practice and racing, we use between 20 and 30 gallons per race weekend.

Humpy's got the right take on the matter, make it easier for the working guy to get to the races.

Just wish someone would make it easier for the racers at the local tracks.... When you go to your local track and see the car count is down, just remember how much it costs these guys just to get to the track and run their car. You might even consider contributing to your favorite racer's "fuel fund"....

Why, NA__AR IS doing something for the local tracks, Ducky. They're trying to make more and more CTS, Cup Lite and Cup races Friday and Saturday night races. That's so the good folks don't have to spend money for gas and tickets to go to their local tracks to see actually racing. They can stay home and watch faux racing in Cup and Cup Lite and something that is close to real racing in the CTS, on TV.

The car count is down at all our local tracks here around Mobile, too but the attendance on the nights they run Saturday Cup races is pitiful.

Last weekend at Houston, we were talking to T Wade Welch (one of the Houston drivers who runs SLM races at Mobile, Opp and 5 Flags) and told him we were getting the SLM ready, but that the USLMA had dropped the Altus (OK) races. He told us to come run Mobile. We picked up the motor last night from our engine guy and hope to have it on the track in the next 45 days or so -we've been cannibalizing it to get the Late Model running, so now we have to replace all that "stuff"! Looks like we'll be heading your way later in the summer...I'll let you know when (there's a Blizzard on 8/15 we're targeting.)

just doing our part to up car counts

The Miller Pro Series is running Mobile this weekend and I think I saw Welch's name on the list, but I might be wrong.

Cale Gale's dad, Bubba, came out of retirement and is tearing up the local Pro Late Model series this season.

One thing to keep in mind about Mobile. No fences. If you "smack the wall in the turns here, you don't. You just go off into space, down a hill. IMHO, Five Flags is a lot better track.

Question...? This T. Wade Welch... Is he really a high-rolling Houston lawyer in his real life?

If you come over here let me know. I'll buy the beer.

no problem on the fences .. our home track (Thunderhill Raceway) in Kyle,TX only has a fence on the front straight, then about 50 feet or so across a grassy "plateau" at 1 & 2 to a fence .. a wire fence with some tires stacked in front of it. the track was "extended" on the back straight a couple lanes wider .. but flat so the inside half of the back straight is banked then the outside part is flat with bill boards about 30 feet off the edge of the track .. nothing in 3 & 4... now imagine all that on a "D" shaped track w/ the front straight the "rounded" straght.

Yes, T Wade is a Houston lawyer. His big client (and sponsor) is Dish Network.

I'll let you know when we finalize plans...

This NASCAR fan is only planning on attending one race this year due to high gas prices. (Pocono). I even went a bought myself a motorcycle to commute to work. (Shadow).

I am a dispatcher so I know how bad the obnoxious prices are hitting everyone. We are even looking at where/when/why/how to make deliveries to try and save miles.

Re: NASCAR hit hard by obnoxious oil prices

I would think that there is a LONG WAY to go before any effects are felt.
After all, in Europe gas is around $8 per gallon, and F1 tickets are closer to and over a Grand per race (better seats). Up in my neck of the woods gas is close to $6 per gallon, and a Condo Downtown sells for over $2,000 per square foot.
You guys are getting off easy...so far
