Re: Who Needs To Walk Away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kyle Busch is 23 and just hitting his prime, I say he's got a few more good years left and then should retire instead of hanging around like DEJ and Jeff Gordon. Jimmie Johnson perfect example. Should've retired at the end of last year, go out a winner. This year, the poor guy can barely finish in the top 10. Everybody askin' him when's he gonna win?
Interesting. So, IAW the film, which I'm going out on a limb and assume you feel that it has some sociological merit, In seven years, Kyle should be hospice-bound, NA__AR-wise - NOT literally?

Interest concept. I also find the idea that Jeffie and Junior are "just hanging around" kind of bizarre but then lot's of things slide right by my feeble, Teflon-coated brain.

Just my 2 cents!
Boy you got that right. I just can't understand why NAPA keeps keeps pouring money into that horrid race team and it's washed up driver.

Guess I'm being a little dense on this one... help me understand it's relevance.

Basically I recall that it was a sci-fi movie about the future where when a human attains age thirty they are labeled for extermination. As I recall, it was a theme a lot of "Generation X'ers" thought had merit.

I took the message being sent as Cup racing in particular, and possibly auto racing in general, is the domain of the young. I guess that people such as you and I are just so much excess baggage.

You guys are thinking like it's 1970 again. It's not.

Sponsorship money to get into first place or a chase spot as compared to a car that runs barely in the top 35 but gets TONS of exposure with an in car camera, driver is co-host of a weekly show, driver is frequently talkeda bout good or bad, a driver that every fan knows (and knows he drives the NAPA car).

Now winning the championship in sponsorship would be great, but you could spend 50% of the money on a top 35 team and get 75% of the exposure? What would you do?

Notice in recent years the move to more and more sponsorships of lower teams and only certain races. Not every company needs that last Nth of exposure, especially with the diminishing returns at the very top of sponsorship levels.

So to sum up, NAPA sponsors Mikey and gets their return on their investment for what they spend in exposure. Doesn't matter if he wins or looses.

Same can be said for a lot of racers. It's called Bang for the Buck. Like him or not Mikey is a lot of bang for the buck in sponsorship money.

gotcha. I had forgotten about the age thing.

speaking of which .. did you notice the kid, Reutimann, wheeling the UPS-mobile to a Top 10? evidently the kid knew how to make it go... on the other side of the coin, there was the "old guy" who figured out how to turn a pile of manure into a Top 5...

(in case you didn't figure out that last one, it's none other than Gordo! think maybe Letarte might have silenced a few detractors this week?)
