2008 Free Agents

I keep on hearing about how there are alot of drivers who have contracts expiring this year. Does anyone have a list on who those drivers are?

Stewart, Biffle, Labonte, Truex, Newman and Edwards are the main ones this season.

Edwards has agreed to stay with Roush and apparently Labonte will stay with Petty. Roush says Biffle is close but I don't believe it. I think Smoke is as good as gone from Gibbs, to be immediately replaced by Lagano. I think Truex will end up in Mears' seat and Newman...? RCR, if the seat in the fourth team doesn't go to Wimmer.

But, those are just educated guesses.

So Mears' contract is also up? What about Jimmie Johnson, when does he open up? I know that Jeff Gordon has a lifetime contract with Hendrick, so he isnt moving anywhere. Do you have any other names? And when do you think we are going to know where these guys are going?

I didn't say that Mears' contract was up. Integrity is totally lacking in both team management and driver loyalty, as far as today's NA__AR contracts are concerned. They are enforced only if it is beneficial to do so. If Truex wants to come to Hendrick, Rick have Casey out the door quicker than you can say mail fraud.

Re: 2008 Free Agents

After tonight, I think Biff is totally frustrated with RFR. I look for him to be one of the first to jump - and it'll help Jack resolve his 5 teams issue. Question is will the Coach be willing to go to 4 teams? That's where I'd like to see him go...

RD I was thinking the same thing. Biffle does seem frustrated. I think he would be a good fit at Gibbs. But for some odd reason I've always thought that if he left Roush he'd go to DEI.

Re: 2008 Free Agents

I thought about DEI, but they aren't as attractive as JGR. Even if Truex left, they'd have to show some real progress in performance and reliability before I'd give them a chance at Biff. And remember, they have Martin/Almirola in one car, Smith in another and rumor is Bass Pro Shops isn't wanting to stick around next year. That means Truex's ride might be hurting for bucks if he stays and not attractive if he doesn't.

'Course that could all change in an instant.

Listening to the post-race interviews and commentator comments (until I thought they were over and therefore missed Ragan's) Biff isn't the only unhappy camper at Roush. McMurray, Kenseth and Ragan all complained about "loose wheels." Opie was about the only really satisfied driver. I never heard anything from the other two Roush teams (#28 and #3 about "loose wheels, so maybe the Yates garage has it figured out.

My son thinks the problem is an inferior batch of wheels (I'd bet Roush orders them by the car load.)

I, on the other hand, think it's one of two things:
  1. The wheel studs are inferior quality and are "stretching" during the run. The reason Yates isn't affected is they get theirs from a different parts bin.
  2. Sabotage. Someone has "fiddled" with the Roush compressed gas regulators so that they aren't delivering the advertised pressure to the impacts, thus causing the lug nuts to be incorrectly tightened.
but then I've been wrong before...

Both your son's and #1, I can go with quite easily.

#2...? A bit too "Grassy Knoll" for my tastes but... When people play for the stakes the Cup teams are playing for, who knows...?

I'm surprised Jack hasn't thought of that one and blamed Toyota for doing it.
