Patriots Moss forming racing team

New England Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss announced the formation of Moss Motorsports, LLC, and said Tuesday he hopes to have a team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series by the end of this year.
So far the team hasnt a driver, manufacturer, or sponsor lined up.

This one is just for you LSC. Just think, your favorite receiver from your favorite football team in your favorite sport.
And you think I never do anything nice for you.

You know, whenever you hear about something like this, a once-problematic player starting his own charity or outside business venture like this, it's almost confirmation that he's got his life turned around. Hopefully that's the case with Moss here too... I'm confident that this is a good sign for the New England wideout.

It's still weird and a little hard for me to hear Moss being referred to as the New England receiver
It would be cool if it all works out though.

Some of my favorite sports memories are going up to games in Minneapolis during the 98 and 99 season with my dad and watching Randy dominate. He is one of my favorite Vikings of all time. I am not so sure he is successful in this venture, but it would be very cool if he was.

I'll withhold any comments until something real is in place. He's done nothing more than start a corporation at this point in time. Now he needs to find sponsorship so that he can actually get going on some of the ground work. If and when this ever happens I really hope that he is just a background owner. The last thing an active team needs is an active or retired player eating up the spotlight.

Racing team aside, those of you in the GTG fantasy football league this upcoming season better not fall asleep at the draft because if Moss is available, I'm taking him!

No one said anything so expecting to have a team racing by the end of the season without a driver, manufacturer or sponsor lined up isnt a bit optimistic?

Re: Patriots Moss forming racing team

Heck, we here at GTG could announce that we are forming a Craftsman Truck Series racing team and it'd be no different to what Randy Moss did!

The only reason why his announcement got more pub than anything we could put together is, well, HE's Randy Moss and we aren't!

For you and I it would be optimistic but with his resources getting something real going is a possibility ... but I'll wait til it actually happens before I get real excited.

Just as I don't care about Bob Kraft I won't care about Randy Moss in his position as a team owner. I'm more interested in the actual team.

Re: Patriots Moss forming racing team

Let's see. A high profile (I assume; I confess to never have heard of the guy) wants to start a Cup team? All he needs is a fleet of cars, a driver, a sponsor, a crew chief, a crew, a building from which to operate, a connection to a manufacturer, etc., etc., etc...

With the exception of a business manager, a big bank account and fame, he and I are in about the same shape when it comes to starting a Cup team.

(Not an original idea. I heard at least two media types give a similar analogy today.)

I'm thinking that you may have a knowledge advantage over Moss.

Thanks for the undeserved vote of confidence.

I'm even more leery of big-name jocks getting involved in NA__AR than I am of dot com and telcomm sponsorships.

The only one I can think of, off the top of my head who was successful was the Daugherty guy who was part owner of the Alliance Driving School BGN championship car that Robert Pressley drove.

Staubach and Aiken pulled out, Magic Johnson never got off the ground and Jackie Joyner and her hubby didn't hang around very long.

Yeah, I know. Coach might be a anomaly but he was a proven leader and he also had a history of racing involvement (AA/Fuel dragsters if memory serves.

Bear with me. I'm trying to work my way through this. LSC said he hoped Moss would just be a background owner. So were the people you named above not background owners and that's why they failed? You implied you needed a history of racing. What about Joe Gibbs? What does he do anyway? Owner or what? Is he successful? Did he have a previous racing background before he got into it?
