NASCAR married to race in Mexico

Robbie Weiss is NASCAR's multilingual internationalist -- the managing director of NASCAR's growing international game plan, a former TV executive, and now also vice president of broadcasting for the new NASCAR Media Group umbrella (based now in Charlotte). Weiss said that things are going just spiffily, and he's optimistic that NASCAR's Hispanic operation is full-speed ahead: "This is not an experiment. We're married to our partners in Mexico City, and we're looking ahead to having kids and grandkids," Weiss said. -- Winston-Salem Journal

Big Question: Why race in Mexico City?

Re: NASCAR married to race in Mexico

I hope they stay racing there. I hope that in the future the cup series is racing there too. I don't usually watch the road courses that nascar runs right now, i find them kinda boring. But so far I have watched every lap of the races at Mexico. That track just seems to have better racing.

It's got my vote, there and Montreal as well.
Some of the most Exciting racing on the schedule.
Maybe it's their "Chili dogs".

I enjoyed watching the Montreal race too. I don't know why, but the road courses that the cup series run just seem boring to me.

It could be because they were designed to comply with F1 standards?, wider and faster.
The only thing I can think of is an Arnold Palmer designed Golf Course vs an old farm field.
*Just guessing.

I don't get why they pit as soon as they can to be able to make it to the end on gas. Why don't they pit later so they have fresher tires? Seems to be just the opposite of a regular all lefty race.

If you pit first, you'll be in the lead when the others finally have to pit. It's the old strategy used at Watkins Glen and Infineon Raceway.

^ Unless you pit last and pull several fastest laps while the rest of the field is at the pits, just ask Micheal Schumacher.

Well it was designed for F1 standard in a time when the performance of F1 car was equal to today's Formula Ford or Formula BMW at best.

In NASCAR races there is usually a lot of cautions. If you pit in the early part of the race, you'll catch up to the field during that caution. If the drivers ahead pit, they'll come out of the pits behind you. You not have "track position" which is very important or a road course.

I called Michael. But he wasn't in.

Montreal is OK. It's in "southern" Canada.

Yeah, we need to stay in the states.

The drivers have a lot on their plates. But, do you know how they get to a race track? They get into their owner's plane (sometimes even their own plane) and when they get to where they are going, someone has a limo to take them to the track. Oh! It's tough.

The crews have it even tougher. The last time that I checked it is 983 miles from Charlotte to Montreal crossing international borders. But staying in the good old US, its 2,775 from Charlotte to Sonoma. Both are road courses so everything should be equal.

We need to stay here in the good old US so we can enjoy those Mexican nachos or French fries during the race.
