Carl Edwards works hard to stay in shape

Carl Edwards' PR gig at Sonoma was a "physical test," of sorts - grape-stomping and bike riding. He's a fitness buff, to put it mildly. "For me physical fitness and trying to lead a fit, healthy lifestyle is a really big part of my life, and it's helped me a in a lot of ways," Edwards said. "As a race driver you don't have to be really fit, where if you're a triathlete you're going to find out who's really fit. I swim like a rock, so I can't imagine that part. "Being fit helps you in general with your life. And we're at the point now in NASCAR racing that one-half or one-tenth of a second per lap can make a difference. So if at the end of four hours you're feeling a little better, you can get a little more out of the car." Edwards doesn't just work out, he works out with special trainers, from the Carmichael Training System (there's one center in Asheville). And he says the regimen is not just about pumping iron or doing cardio, but thinking about health: "I want to make sure the things I eat and the activities I do are benefiting me, that they're not detrimental," he said. "Every time you pick up something to eat, you think Is this going to make me stronger?' -- Winston-Salem Journal

Gotta be in good shape to do a back flip off a car after running 500 miles at 200mph.

I still think Mark Martin could take him.

I don't generally gamble but I might be able to rustle up a buck or two for that bet.

Its nice for a race car driver to care about fitness. If it was me behind the wheel I'd probably smoke a pack a race and have a bag of doritos (or whoever my sponosor was) on the seat beside me.

closed face helmets are responsible for the demise of food/snacks being passed to the driver during pit stops as well as for smoking while driving...funny how safety always seems to take away the simple pleasures

I couldn't date if even if I had the opportunity! I used to be a woman who liked the fitness guys all muscle. Now I prefer a man with a little meat on his bones-not fat! LOL! Everytime I see Carl do his flip I think of that saying "just call me flipper"! LOL! They should have that on his car!

Re: Carl Edwards works hard to stay in shape

Sure he can do a back flip off the door of his car, anybody can do that, but can he do a back flip from the ground? Actually I'm more impressed with Tony Stewart's physical prowess when it comes to climbing the fence. Let's see Carl Edwards do that!

I, for one, cannot do a backflip from my car door. At least not if I expect to land on my feet. And I'm betting if Tony Stewart can climb the fence, Edwards could probably climb the fence, go down other side, run up the stairs to the top of the grandstand, run back down, climb the fence again, come down the other side, take a lap around the track, go back to his coach, take a shower, cook dinner and have a brewski before Tony got to the top of the fence. I say more power to both of them. Just walking to my mailbox puts me out of commission for the day!

I believe they've asked Tony to stop doing that. The fences cannot take that much pressure.

Ouch. Now that's below his oversized belt.

Funny that you should mention his famous back flip. I heard an old interview that Carl did when he was in BGN. He confessed that the back flip he does wasn't his idea originally. He gave credit to his friend, Tyler Walker, who he saw do it off the rear wheel of a sprint car after a win in a WoO race. This is the same Tyler Walker who is now barred from NASCAR competition due to illegal drugs.

The drugs have nothing to do with Cousin Carl; I just thought it was a little-known fact that was pretty ironic, that you might find interesting.
