AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Sprint Cup drivers Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne say they never have undergone a drug test as NASCAR competitors.
"In the 10 years that I've raced, I've never been drug-tested," Harvick said. "To me, that's not a proper drug policy for a professional sport. We haven't made any headway whatsoever on the drug-testing policy."
Harvick and Stewart were reacting to an ESPN The Magazine story this week in which former driver Aaron Fike said he competed in Craftsman Truck Series races while he was on heroin.
"I have been in a race with him and I know for a fact that he's not the only one," Harvick said. "There's another driver that was suspended that I can almost guarantee you was in the race car while he was under the influence, and that pisses me off.
"I'm sure I'll be blasted for saying what I feel, but I don't want to be on a race track with people like that. It's irresponsible more than anything."
All four Cup drivers said they are in favor of regular testing.
"I would love it,'' Stewart said. "I've never been asked to take one yet. I think it should be mandatory to have random drug testing. I think it's a great idea. The Fike situation shows that as an organization, we're not doing a good job of seeing this before it happens."
NASCAR's substance-abuse policy includes the right to test any driver at any time, but officials only do so if they believe a competitor might have a problem.
"The responsibility here rests across the board -- with the drivers and competitors, owners, teams and NASCAR," said Kerry Tharp, NASCAR's director of communication. "We test an individual when we have reasonable suspicion. A positive test results in severe consequences and is a career-changing moment for that person.

My guess is that NASCAR believes that it's history of rare drug use/abuse is more or less still true today. Time for them to wake up and realize that it probably isn't true anymore. Teams are not a group of 10-15 guys. These are corporations now. I'm sure even the small teams are taking 20 plus people to the track every week. Then you have the business end of it back home. I'd think they'd be better off to start testing now before we get caught up in the baseball mess.

I think they should test all drivers at daytona at each race there. thats twice a year. that sure be a good deterant.
it sure be up to the teams to test thier employees.

I hope NASCAR does not have its head in the sand on this issue. The mind set of the drivers seem to be with main stream thinking that drug users should not be permitted on the race track. But, NASCAR seems to be taking a hands off approach up to now.

On the other hand, if NASCAR finds a foreign substance in the fuel system, big fines and suspensions will be levied.

I think they should test them once a month, or at least every 2 months. It should be up to the owners, thats true. But since Kevin, Tony and others are saying they've never been tested, I guess the owners aren't to worried about it.

Most drivers have never been drug tested. This is nothing new. When someone admits to drugs in the sport that is the only time you hear of it. ALL drivers are aware of it just don't bring it up till someone admits it or gets caught.

Funny you should mention Cousin Carl, Vince... Remember that little brouhaha he had with Kenseth last season? I'm not, repeat: N-O-T, accusing Carl of in under the influence of anything but what proof do we have that what we saw of that episode wasn't a classic case of "Roid-Rage?"
