Bill Davis Racing recently sued Rockford-Montgomery Labs (RML) for breach of their contract for sponsorship of the No. 36 cup car, which was driven much of last year by Jeremy Mayfield. RML has paid only $25,000 of the $14 million it was supposed to pay for sponsorship of the No. 36 cup entry last season, according to a lawsuit filed April 2 in North Carolina Superior Court in Winston-Salem. RML is the maker of 360 OTC, a line of hangover and headache medicine.
The sponsorship was a three-year deal that was scheduled to increase to $14.5 million in 2008 and $15 million in 2009. There was a sponsor’s option for 2010 for $15.5 million. An this is considered a "primary" sponsor. A race team also adds several "secondary" sponsors to their car. With this amount of money BDR should be able to field a competitive cup car. You have just got to keep the money coming in.
