Sell stock or not?

Taking a race team public may or may not be the next wave to hit Nascar. If people will and do buy the junk sold at Nascar races then they would likely buy stock in a team but who knows for sure.Good read on what Petty may do. Outside help - NASCAR - Yahoo! Sports

A friend of mine used to have some stock in the Boston Celtics. Every so often he'd get a dividend check for .58 cents or so. He also had a stock certificate showing he was a partial owner. I can see it happening but you can be sure that those of us that invest $100. will have few if any rights in the decision making process. It's one way to keep a team afloat and to keep fans happy ... at least for those who enjoy buying the NASCAR stuff.

Re: Sell stock or not?

The Green Bay Packers are the only US sports team that is "publicly" owned. It works for them because all the fans in the stands are on the same side.
Now, can you imagine the public "shareholder brawls"between opposing teams in the stands at a Nascar race.
Not a pretty sight.....Think Soccer.

I'm sorry. Fights in the grandstands are a completely different issue than whether teams should sell shares to the public.

Idiots are going to be in the stands no matter what, but here in America, you don't see too many riots breaking out in the bleachers, for any reason.

Even more intersting than buying stock in a team, is buying stock in an athlete. A young rookie could IPO himself against future earnings. That's not limited to NASCAR, either, but I don't think anybody's done that yet. However, it's only a matter of time.

You may be right, but somehow I’m skeptical.
As you may have notice there is a lot of "fans" that publicly voice their "HATE" of certain drivers (see Forum(s)).
Some time ago a Dale Sr. fan killed a Gordon fan.

As demonstrated at Talladega and other races, fans have no problem hurdling objects at opposing drivers with malicious intent. Actions like that may become an issue with that driver’s shareholder and lead to more violence.

Re: Sell stock or not?

I thought buying a driver's overpriced souvenirs was the same thing as buying stocks: you pay too much for something you like and hope it increases in value .. when it doesn't you keep it for sentimental value 'cause you danged sure don't want to loose money on it selling if off for half what you (stupidly) paid for it.

but then I could be seeing it all wrong...

Re: Sell stock or not?

If you own any Petty Enterprises stock, now is the time to sell.

Collectibles: Out dated one will go on sale soon.

Re: Sell stock or not?

The problem with taking a race team public is...

while it produces istant capital and cash thru the stock sale.

It also produces stock holders.

Do you want the same mentality that makes things like Ford and GM make crappy products going the way of racing...corporate?

Racing historically hasn't been a money making endauver. Honestly I think that made it a great sport. People who were in racing because they loved it even if the net sum was a loss.

I'd rather not have more bean counters in racing than we already have. You think sponsor demands are ridiculous nowdays wait till you have sponsor demands and stock holder demands.

race teams, like race tracks, don't make their money off racing, but instead off the side business(es). in the case of tracks it's parking, track rentals (testing), food & drink, special events (concerts, etc.) and selling souvenirs. teams, on the other hand make their bucks off the points fund, sponsors, souvenirs and appearances. When you look at the prize money paid to Denny for winning Martinsville ($201,391), it barely paid salaries & expenses! imagine what it costs to take a team to California!!!

Maybe only if they could figure out a way to wear a stock certificate as a piece of wearing apparel?

Re: Sell stock or not?

I actually heard Kyle Petty on rubbing paint late last year talk about stock holders in racing teams.

He said he was against it because if he bought $600k worth of brakes one week and next week something else better was out there he would throw those away (or pass em on to another series etc...) and buy brand new ones.

He said no way that happens on a regular basis with bean counters and stock holders.
