Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

Ok, here goes 1st post. I have tickets for todays (6/3) race. Its obviouisly raining 9:00 a.m. supposed to be worse by green flag, they are calling for rain tomorrow. I'm taking the chance by not showing @ the track today, if postponed until tomorrow (& it rains again) do I have to show up to get some kind of "rain vochure"? Also, how long will they "postpone" until they reschedule?

As long as your ticket is valad and undamaged you should be able to use it whenever the race is actuall run. You may want to call the raceway ticket office to confirm this statement is accurate.

I see you are new to Go Teams Go. Welcome aboard . I hope you will findour forum informative and above all fun. Whenever the race is run please feel free to join us on the live chat during the race and we also have live chat for the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game.

Again welcome

The 9 Inch Ford is a staple in racing. It's strong, not very heavy and fairly easy to setup. At one time, it was "the" rear end to have. The "quick change" is not legal in NASCAR's upper divisions, so it makes sense most everybody is running the 9-inch.

But I haven't been paying attention to (car) rear ends much so I don't know if there's a new super-duper whiz-bang rear end or not. It wouldn't surprise me if there were, but I would think I'd be seeing them for sale in the magazines and I haven't.

Maybe some of the other racers know more...

I am no expert but that is only at Daytona and Talledega you can't go below the yellow line.

I think it's a rule for all "Super-Speedways" which are the non-road course tracks 2 miles or longer.

However, I don't remember it ever being mentioned at Pocono, so that one may not have that rule.

It's definitely DEGA and Daytona in which the going below the yellow line rule comes into play. I think there is one more track in which tbat also comes into play.... just not sure which one.

What's a fuel mileage race and why was Gordon whining about it?
Layman's terms only please.

Well, I'm sure one of the real experts around here could give you a better, more detailed answer, but basically it's the same thing as with fuel mileage in your car. How far (in this case, how many laps) can you get on one tank of gas before you need to fill up again. In Robbie's case, he's saying his rental engines aren't as fuel efficient as some other teams engines, meaning he needs to pit more during a race and thus putting himself at a major disadvantage.

Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

I have what is probably a dumb question. If Nascar has the same size fuel cell for all the cars, how can one get more fuel in it than another one. On Inside Nextel, Biffle said he and another car ran out of fuel during practice and they both coasted to the pumps. He said his held 18+ gallons while the other one held 19+ gallons. Anybody know how if they are all the same size why they were able to get different amounts of fuel in them?

Well frist the car may have a longer fuel hose that would be my guess. That is a old NASCAR trick one car may have a fuel hose thats 9 feet the other may have a hose that is 12 feet.

good answer .. but just to clarify something: Robby gets his engines from Roush/Yates; he's claiming he's getting as much as a quarter of a gallon less fuel mileage than the other teams with engines from the same place. that doesn't sound like much until you figure these cars get in the neighborhood of 5 mpg. it may also be Robby hasn't figured out how, or doesn't want to cheat (something you can never rule out when laps/tankful are at issue.)

See, I knew one of the real experts would add to and refine what I said. Thanks, RD!

that's the most obvious, and hardest to check, way of "cheating". Others include running the fuel line thru a frame member which is itself a tank (but NASCAR is on to this one so it's pretty hard to pull off), taking some of the foam out of the fuel cell (the fuel cell is full of 98% void foam to prevent sloshing - eliminating some of it can get you a few more ounces of fuel), using larger fuel fill and dump hoses, and...

these guys have been at this game for almost 60 years .. if there's a way that hasn't been thought of and tried, there's a lot of Cup teams that'd like to talk to you .. let your imagination run wild!!! oh yeah, NASCAR too!

So is the engine they receive 100% ready to drop in the car or do they add things like the carb, exhausts and so on ? Some of that can make a difference. If I remember during the race they talked about different carbs. One gave more power but at the cost of more fuel.... obviously.
