Sorry Steve. I know this has nothing to do with racing but they're one of my favourite groups...

Good group. Popular in the mid to late -50's. I also recommend from The Coasters
"Searching"
"Youngblood" (these two are on the same record)
"Smokey Joe's Cafe"
"Down in Mexicali"
and "Framed." (Great line from this song: "When the judge came down, poured whiskey on my head, turned around to the jury, and said, 'CONVICT THIS MAN; HE IS DRUNK!', what could I do?"

Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

Who's the President?

Ok ... I'm an idiot! I never paid attention to NASCAR politics until I joined GTG. So I guess you've created the beast!

Who's the president of NASCAR? Mike Helton (who I love), or Bill France Jr.? Is Mike the president, but Bill France is the owner?

I came to know Helton when we lost Dale. What is his role? Does Bill France "own" NASCAR and is the one who makes up the rules?

Please explain. I don't need you to write an epistle ... a simple explanation would be nice!

Probably a really stupid question for a long-time NASCAR fan, but Google isn't giving me any succint information.

not a stupid question .. this is as brief an answer as I could find:
National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, Inc. information and related industry information from Hoover's

Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

do tracks ever change significantly in size ?

i mean maybe they knock out an end wall and make the straightaways longer ... or maybe even make the track shorter

wider .. thinner ?

now im not talking about a few feet here and there due to normal repaving or anything ..... i mean a fairly drastic change

The last ones that I can think of was Atlanta and Richmond. I can remember how much damage a car can get by the old guard rails at Richmond. Many hammers were needed when racing there back then. Late 60's early 70's for me. Ah yes, such good memories of when racing was fun. Now its way too serious.

here's a short, but exhaustive, history of track size changes over the years for the currently active tracks in NASCAR but does not address changes in banking nor surface (the road courses often times add chicanes to slow down speeds on longer straights, and then there's the "cut-offs" which allow the track to be reconfigured by blocking or unblocking a turn.)
  • Atlanta Motor Speedway
    • 1960-1969 = 1.500 miles
    • 1970-3/97 = 1.522 miles (added 116 feet)
    • 11/97-2007 = 1.540 miles (added 95 feet)
  • Bristol Motor Speedway
    • 1961-3/69 = .500 miles
    • 7/69-2007 = .533 miles (added 174 feet)
  • Darlington Raceway
    • 1950-1952 = 1.250 miles
    • 1953-1969 = 1.375 miles (added 924 feet)
    • 1970=2007 = 1.366 miles (removed 47 feet)
  • Infineon Raceway
    • 1989-1997 = 2.520 miles
    • 1998-1999 = 1.949 miles (removed 3015 feet)
    • 2000 = 1.990 miles (added 269 feet)
    • 2001 = 2.000 miles (added 52 feet - probably a chicane)
    • 2001-2007 = 1.990 miles (removed previous change)
  • Martinsville Speedway
    • 1949-1969 = .500 miles
    • 1970-1983 = .525 miles (added 132 feet)
    • 1984-4/91 = .526 miles (added 5 feet)
    • 9/91-1993 = .525 miles (removed previous change)
    • 1994-2007 = .526 miles (and put it back again!)
  • Michigan International Speedway
    • 1969-6/70 = 2.000 miles
    • 8/70-1971 = 2.040 miles (added 211 feet)
    • 1972-2007 = 2.000 miles (removed previous change)
  • Richmond International Raceway
    • 1953-3/68 = .500 miles
    • 9/68 = .625 miles (added 660 feet)
    • 4/69 = .500 miles (removed previous change)
    • 9/69-2/88 = .542 miles (added 221 feet)
    • 9/88-2007 = .750 miles (added 1362 feet)
  • Watkins Glen International
    • 1957-1965 = 2.300 miles
    • 1966-1985 = no NASCAR races
    • 1986-1991 = 2.428 miles (added 675 feet)
    • 1992-1993 = 2.450 miles (added 380 feet)
    • 1994-1999 = 2.454 miles (added 21 feet - probably a chicane)
    • 2000-2007 = 2.450 miles (removed previous change)

IROC Closing Down

I was surfing the web, when I stumbled upon this article about IROC. It's closing down after 30 years. Will we eve see another racing all-star event like this?

thanks for the question, unregistered.

I think it's unlikely there'll be another event like IROC. their venues tended to favor NASCAR drivers and, to tell the truth, the events were boring.

but that doesn't mean that some enterprising sole won't come along and create another event that fixes the problems with IROC.

Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

OK I got a question that I could use some good answers on.

I have run out of my pocket most of my owner/driver career and it doesn't go too well by mid season, if I have a run of bad luck. The money tends to dry up fast. What I want to know is how do I get a money sponsor? I have plenty of sponsors that do the paint, lettering, body parts from the wrecking yard and so on and one to buy a couple sets of tires. But I need money. How do I convince a business owner that he can benefit by advertising on my race car? What can I give to him that would benefit his business, besides a tax write off? I need some ideas here.

Don't know if this would be good.... maybe photos with the product(provided the business would want your photo with their product). I'm not in a car so that's all I would be able to think of.
