looks good to me .. that means he'd have to win 11 races and finish 20th in the 12th to win the Chase .. still hard to do when there's only 10 races in the Chase; and starting today, he's still out of luck 'cause there's only 11 races left this season!

but there's still hope (for those that are hoping), if he wins Richmond and Harvick DNF's, Jr's got a chance...

Sounds to me like the chase is sort of like the NFL playoffs. You could have a wildcard team who didn't do so well knock out a team that may have been undefeated for the season. Except that in NASCAR Tony Stweart has 10 races to knock JJ or JG out of winning.

Am I close?

Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

The greatest thing about our sport is the unknown factor. A slight bump and something can and most always will break. It seems the cheapest part has held up the dance in victory lane for so many of us most of the time.

Also in our sport if you go out of bounds your probably not coming back!

Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

This has been bugging me awhile. Races run counterclockwise right? So do horse races and baseball. Why? Is there a reason. Why not clockwise?
I remember when I was a kid and went rollerskating, ever so often they would reverse directions and go clockwise. Threw everyone off.
Why isnt it more natural to go clockwise for this stuff?
(no RD and LSC I'm not just trying to be difficult. I have been thinking about this)

Would you believe, because thats the way it is?

I think it has something to do with the fact the driver is on the left side of the car and could see the pits and made communication possible. i.e. hand signals, pit board or just a good finger at the oppertune moment

I know thinking is difficult for you and I congratulate you on the admission. But, you really do need to do something about those bugs.

Sorry, I can't tell you why horse races, baseball and roller skating all go counterclockwise. I've been sworn to secrecy by LSC.

But for automobile racing, it depends on the type of racing. when it's a road course it is most often clockwise, but not necessarily. Laguna Seca is an example of a road course that runs counterclockwise. all oval track racing I have seen is counterclockwise.

Now the "Why?" of the matter. When ever a driver has a preference, the driver wants to be on the inside of a turn. If the course is circular, then the driver will be on the inside for most turns if it is run in a counterclockwise direction while driving "American-style" cars. Most road courses were originally raced primarily by "English-style" cars where the driver is on the right side of the vehicle, thus they preferred to race clockwise.

now, my guess for baseball and rollerskating is they are "American" and so counterclockwise is "normal"... also, I don't know how accurate most western movies are, but it seems to me the wagon driver either sat in the middle or on the left side .. maybe that's where the American auto driving position came from. still this is only a swag and therefore does not constitute an official answer.

Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

I think, and I emphasize the word "think", that it may have something to do with this Northern/Southern hemisphere thing. Maybe not. Maybe it's The Coriolis Effect, which is too complicated for me to absorb. Who knows?

Why does water drain counter-clockwise? Or toilets flush counter-clockwise. Natural gravitational pull? Who knows?

The roller-skating analogy was a good one. There's no "driver", so why is it so difficult to skate clockwise?

Awesome question, and goes far beyond racing, doesn't it? Dog racing, running, ... the list goes on and on.
