| Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR I remember seeing a post recently, it seems like either king43stp or BBW was the poster, that described the eras. and I think the transition year from "pre-modern" (aka, the old days) to modern was in the early '70s. there was also a short era we call "the early days" where there was lots of racin but not many rules. I personally think this era stuff is an attempt by some to discount the records of certain early racers so that certain later racers look good. but that's just my opinion.

| Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR I think technically it was the signing of Winston as title sponsor in the early 70s, as Duck stated. |

Some believe that it was 1971, when RJR began its sponsorship of the Series. I don't go along with this because, in 1971, there were still 46 races on the schedule but only races over 250 miles counted toward the Winston Cup. Personally, I believe the exact date of the beginning of the "Modern Era" was January 11, 1972, when Bill France Sr turned the reins over to Bill Jr. That was the year the schedule was reduced to 31 races. It was also the year the factory sponsorship were totally gone from NASCAR and big money sponsors came into the party and have yet to leave. That was the year STP took over Petty Enterprises and K&K Insurance (about the only insurance Co. in the country which would insure a race track at the time) sponsored Bobby Issac's Dodge. It was the year that NASCAR began paying appearance money and introduced the "Winner's Circle Program (the precursors of the provisional plan) for showing up for all the races. This later changed to the most recent twelve winners. There is an argument to be made that the "real" modern era began on September 14, 1993, when Jeff Gordon started his first Cup race at Atlanta. Take your choice.

On the same note, when Gordon started his first race in '92 (also Richard Petty's last, in case you haven't already heard) could and maybe is called Post Modern, the era NASCAR started to really turned into NA$CAR. |
