Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

OK experts ... theoretical question. Here is the scenario. The driver in the lead is taking the white flag. He and the second place driver are the only cars on the lead lap. The third place car is 3 laps down as is most of the rest of the field. In turn two an accident occurs between the 1st place and 2nd place car and they both spin off the track and are now unable to continue in the race. Does the white flag stand for the rest of the field or must they complete the prescribed number of laps for a complete race ?

I was just watching "Back in The Day" and it made me wonder. They didn't have that scenario but it came to my feeble mind.

Re: Ask The Experts ... NASCAR

the 3rd place car would win wouldn't it because the white flag means the last lap. If you happen to be 3 laps down you don't run 3 more laps after the checkered flag, right?

I was watchin that too, waitin on the trucks to start and hopin David Green does good.

Now, I don't know what the rule book states on the question at hand but here's what I believe:

With todays rules, the field is frozen at the moment of caution, and once the white flag is taken, there can be no green, white, checker so the race is over once the caution flies.

Whoever the leader was at the last scoring loop would be the winner, provided he is able to get the car back around to complete the last lap. If he can't, the 2nd place car would pass him and he'd win. If they're both unable to continue, the 3rd place car would make his 3 laps up and win. Remember, the white was taken but the lap never technically finished, so while the 2 leaders are disabled, the 3rd place car is making up time on them.

way to go BBW!

back in the day, they'd have paraded around under the yellow until the prescribed number of laps had been completed for the race, which means the 3rd place car would win, unless (of course) either of the first two were able to get to the finish line before then in which case the first one there would win. as I remember the crew and/or the driver could push the car across the line, but no one else.

did you also see the guy with the kitty litter in the pits? they wasted lots of cheap (aka, FREE) gas back then 'cause those quick dump cans didn't have a valve on the end of the nozzle like todays teams have. it was also interesting to see the 27 pump jacks being used and 20 sec pit stops for 2 tires and 14 gal of gas.
