| Change to top series' name might be coming NASCAR executives may need to brace for yet another name change for their top racing series. This year it's called the Sprint Cup and before that for three seasons it was called the Nextel Cup. And before that for 33 years it was called the Winston Cup. Wall Street has been alive with speculation about a takeover of Sprint Nextel. AT&T and Verizon have been two companies mentioned as possibly interested. Now the German company that owns T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) is also being mentioned - in part because of the weakness of the U.S. dollar. -- Winston-Salem Journal Winston-Salem Journal | NASCAR Notebook: Change to top series' name might be coming |

| Re: Change to top series' name might be coming Ever since the RJ Reynolds folks pulled out, the name just hasn't sounded right. Yeah, Winston is still corporate sponsorship, but Winston Cup just had a nice ring. If another takeover happens, NASCAR should seriously consider calling it the AT&T (or whoever) Grand National Series, because the more name changes we go through, the worse it's gonna sound. Plus, Mr. France said he wanted to reconnect with racing's roots. Sure it was just a media ploy as we've seen nothing to really validate it, but something like that would be nice.
