Drivers...The Flu or Hungover?

I watch a lot of Sports but I have to admit it seems in NASCAR there is a driver or two every weekend with the "FLU" They mentioned it during vegas and calif. testing..."so and so is fighting the flu" In Speedweeks @ daytona they mentioned several drivers had "flu" like sympthoms. This past weekend in Vegas Kasey Kane had the "flu". I know JR. has had the "flu" 3 or 4 times these past 3 years. How often do these guys get the "FLU"? And why do they always get the "flu" in fun places. Never hear of so and so with the "flu" in Martinsville!! I'm in my 40's and have had the "flu" maybe 3 times my whole life. But I have been hungover many many times.... Just a fun observation!

Don't know about the drivers. But I'm in my 40's and have had the flu twice since Dec. Have it now, and if they have the flu like I have, I don't know how they could drive a race car like they did. All I can say is I wish my doc gave me the kind of drugs their doc did.

Prior to any big game, some sports figures have been known to activate a "performance escape clause" just in case things go sideways.

AKA: flu, sprain, sore, bruise, fever etc....

In a lot of sports, hockey, baseball,... the guy stays half-naked together in a humid locker, nice place for a virus to attack new victim

As for this week, just look at the weather they had last week in CA, 40-50's weather, a lot of rain. Nice weather to catch a cold and give it 5 days to develop and you get it the weekend after.

Lucky you to get the flu so little, I am also like that.
But notice the often say "flu-like syndrom" Which is more common and can be cause by a simple cold, food poisoining,....

I don't think the guy nowaday get hungover but it's not impossible

Re: Drivers...The Flu or Hungover?

Let's see. What's more the subject that really gets the blood flowing amongst the "real TV" crowd?

There is the "other sports" (at least so far) headline categories of: murder, attempted murder, dog fighting, wife beating, steroids, drug possession, accessory to (fill in the blank), battery, assault, - please feel free to add your most memorable here.

And what would we dig to find possibile contemptuous behavior and suspect activities around -- Ahh yes - the Flu, aka for some - drunkeness.

Give me a friggin' break. Never mind, we're just taking one. Good bye string.

Re: Drivers...The Flu or Hungover?

There is a very serious strain of flu going around right now. Has nothing to do with the weather, cold, warm and the like. It has everything to do with germs. Thankfully, I've been spared.

Drunkenness? Hungover? I seriously doubt it. It's not just the drivers. It's the teams as well. If anyone is stupid enough to get trashed the night before a race, they wouldn't be long for the sport. Just doesn't make any sense.

Ever heard of the ASIAN FLU??? Or the 1918 FLU PANDEMIC??? Killed lots of people those did...

The FLU (short for "Influenza" for those who may not know...) is SERIOUS!

Most of these drivers are, um how do I put this kindly... "slight" of stature - (in English: SMALL guys) and are probably more susceptible to getting sick than your run-o-the-mill 250-pounder... I mean, how many hands have YOU (or anyone here) shaken in the past week? Or month? These drivers will probably shake more hands in one day than we will in one YEAR! Odds are very good these guys get sick...

Re: Drivers...The Flu or Hungover?

On the one hand, there's publicly documented statistics of NASCAR drivers who have tipped a few too many (Kurt Busch, anyone?) And there's publicly documented statistics of NASCAR drives who NEVER touch the stuff (Kyle Petty, Mark Martin, etc.) But those, I think, are the extremes. The most will take a shot now and again, but that's about it. Any racer who's focused on his career is interested in being in the best possible condition when the race starts. Hangovers, blurry eyes, fatigue, and the like are sure fire ways to find yourself in the infield care center before the race is over and your trusty steed on the way to the glue factory. Funny thing is, sponsors and owners generally find ways to find "other accommodations" for errant drivers...and every driver knows it.

remember, it aint nickles and dimes they're racing for!
