Carl Edwards car fails post race inspection!!!

Inspection update | 'Issue' found on No. 99

But can someone explain to me why they are fining teams for this infraction???

Is it safety? I sure can't imagine it would provide an advantage.

I don't understand this rule. Does he have to forfeit his win?? How does this effect the outcome?

I remeber Kyle Busch had the same thing happen in a Busch race, if NASCAR does the same he will lose like 100 or 50 points but keep the win.

I believe that it somehow re.lieves the air under the car and helps down force.

Couple pure out and out guesses as to the "why".

* Safety - as you noted may be spill with burn/fire/track surface concern. Perhaps fume related.

* Advantage - (remember, pure guess) - reduction of pressure in the system may have an impact on operating temperature and/or wear/strain/effectvity of some component within the oil circulation system.

Appears it has already been determined the win would stand. Tend to make one believe there's a feeling that while a concern, a firing squad is not being considered. Fact NASCAR spokesman (Poston) is quoted to have said - post race inspection was not failed by the 99.

NASCAR.COM - NASCAR finds 'issue' with 99 in post-race inspection - Mar 2, 2008

Interesting that previous and recent similar issues result in noted difference being the previous incidents has "loose" covers rather than "gone/off" covers. Not sure what to make of the discernment.

Be interesting to see outcome to see if any guesses were close.

You may be right. The local newspaper here said that NASCAR was taking his car back to Charlotte for further inspection. Does this mean that NASCAR may put the car in the wind tunnel for testing to determine if there was an increase in downforce? Does any body have a good pitcture of this oil tank and/or cap?

Oncea3's downforce observation a real good possibility.

Upon reading further info on this (I got this wrong too Biscuit), it's not the holding tank or the cap on same, it is the encasement box around the tank.

See Tuck4's post following which has same link as in our earlier post this a.m. that talks to the "encasement box".

Re: Carl Edwards car fails post race inspection!!!

LAS VEGAS -- Carl Edwards' Sprint Cup victory in the UAW-Dodge 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will stand, but he's likely to lose some of the driver and owner points he earned after NASCAR officials found "an issue" with his No. 99 Ford in post-race inspection late Sunday.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Edwards' car did not fail post-race inspection. But inspectors did find something amiss.

"We had an issue in post-race inspection with the 99. The lid on the oil reservoir encasement, or the oil tank box, was off," Poston said. "So we're going to take the 99 back to the [NASCAR] Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C., and if there are any actions that need to be taken, those will be taken and announced next week."

That makes sence. That possibly could affect downforce of the car. These new cars have the front splitter right on the ground (at speed) and the side curtains keep the wind from under the car on the sides. So, what do you think a loose encasement box would do? Allow air under the car to "vent" causing a suction?

How much would the encasement weigh?

Re: Carl Edwards car fails post race inspection!!!

If I'm not mistaken, loosening the lid on the oil tank box increases horsepower. This is an old trick dragsters used on their final run to win a race. They even took it a step further by draining almost all the oil out. They were sacrificing the engine for the win, because they were gonna rebuild the engine anyway. The NHRA considers this little trick a definite rule infraction.

Re: Carl Edwards car fails post race inspection!!!

It seems NASCAR penalties are more sever if you a fail a pre race inspection as opposed to failing a post race inspection... whats up with that!? Also I don't agree with them not giving the 99 team a penality for that tire that got away. I don't care if the camera guy was in the way or not. Just like they said with Robbie Gordon... "It's black and white and rules are rules." When Robbie said it wasn't his fault but an outside source NASCAR said "It's his crew chief or team members responsiabilty" Well isn't # 99's crew chiefs or team members responsiable to make sure the pits are clear before the car pits? Again...more BS!

I agree. The penalty should be more for post inspection. I also agree about the tire. They knew the car was coming in and should have told the cameraman to move. How is that not the teams fault?
