Re: Casey Mears dropping out of top 35?

Over time, Gustafson (sp?) will top Eury.

That's a given. (I'm assuming you're talking about Eury Jr., not Eury Sr.?)

But will that help Casey enough?

As much as everyone talks about the drivers, it's pretty apparent to the interested observer that HMS has 2 good crew chiefs and 2 also-rans (I don't think much of Letarte, either) and it's a credit to their #1 driver paired with the also ran crew chief that he's still able to run up front. Jury's still out on the other driver paired with an also-ran CC.

He can do it with an average finish of 27th or better over three weeks. He could do it this sunday with a finish of 18th or better.

It will be slightly easier if he can pick up some bonus points.

I'm basing this off the 35th position gaining about 68 points per week. Mears has so far averaged 48 points per week.
Dang it, my math held. Casey finished 13th in that third race, and now, despite a 42nd place finish in race 5, he's still in the top 35. Barely.

I guess he's only one bad race away from dropping out, though.

Looks a lot like last season, doesn't it? It seems as though Casey like a slow start then have a fast finish. I think he'll be OK and will keep a lock on remaining Hendrick's fourth team.

Casey does seem to be a slow starter for some reason, he was 32nd after 4 races and 26th after 5 races last year. He has had a rough go of it so far, but I think he is still a borderline chase guy (top 15 type).

I agree... he was bad at Ganassi with just an occassional good run here and there. At Hendricks, same thing. I was surprised when he got that Hendricks ride and even more surprised he has kept it.
