Good point, its like HMS put TOO tight of a leash on him and it had the opposite effect than they desired, but Gibbs gives him a little more free rein but maybe just enough leash to keep him somewhat under control. Its going to be interesting to see how this kid develops now.

While just an early moment in a long season, he has:
  • Signifcantly left behind the other potential HMS trade bait (Mears)
  • Significantly left behind his replacement at HMS
  • Is the current top dog at JGR
  • Is Toyo's best performer
  • Is the Sprint Cup points leader
But then of course, there's next week ----

My bad, Simon. I'm afraid I started the mixing of Junior into the mix. However, that being said, it's kind of hard to discuss Kyle's being unceremoniously dumped by HMS and not bring The King of the Green Army into discussion.

I still stand by my opinion... Kyle will probably prove to be a more successful driver than Casey but Mears will prove to be a better team mate to his brethren than would Shrub. Every mega-team NEEDS one of their teams to be "The Fourth Team, " and to not diffuse the attention poured on the more successful teams.

Again, sorry that I started the thread down a deadend path. My bad.

They don't miss Kyle, yes he is doing better than all the HMS guys (and the rest of NASCAR for that matter). But Mears is better fit with the rest of these guys.

Mears knows his role and keeps his mouth shut. He's a yes sir no sir person. He's there to serve Gordon and Johnson.

But what does that do for him?? I'd rather be the one that went to JGR, than just be there to block and test for HMS.

At some point you have to bring young talent along.

Keeps him in a job, steady money. Bring young talent along? Not at Hendrick. Well he'll keep someone young in that fourth position to be a guard for the 3 names.

That just goes against the spirit of racing. I know you are right, but I hate it!!

Re: Does HMS Miss Kyle Busch

I'll say HMS will miss Busch if Casey can't get it together and gain the 7 or so spots he needs to even be in the top 35 in the next 3 races.

That would be my dream day, the day a HMS car failed to qualify based on performance - not flunking qualifying.

HMS should have let Casey go and kept Kyle! Kyle may be a hothead but the kid can drive! He going to win a couple of races this year and will be fighting for the cup

It's not about racing, my friend. It's all about business and perception. Casey may not make HMS as much money as Shrub did/would, but his milquetoast personality certainly won't cost them any money and give HMS bad publicity, either. Coupled with the added income Junior would garner (Sorry, Simon...the reference is absolutely germane), Ol' Mr. Ethical (Rick Hendrick) thought Kyle was the logical choice to take it in the shorts.

Now Casey is solidly enthroned as Hendrick's fourth team's driver. He gets a steady paycheck and is deliriously happy whenever a crumb of success comes his way. Basically he functions as the driver for the team that gives Hendrick that extra, 4th team, testing time.

I am kind of thinking that Rick fell into the whole popularity contest our sport is becomming as well. I mean, Tim Richmond was just as free willed, if not more than Kyle is, but people loved him. With KB, not only is he a bit of a hotshot-hothead, he is a Busch boy, who are none too popular to the fans.

Tim stayed until his untimely death because when Tim were to get himself into a bad situation, the response was "man, that Tim Richmond sure don't take any BS". With Kyle, it's like "Rick ought to learn to control that boy."

From an admittedly biased point of view (We all know my feeling about The Felon, right?), you're right. Tim was a character but he had one thing Kyle has yet to attain, maturity which comes with age. Even being the whore-monger he admittedly was, Tim had credibility which Kyle might attain in another four or five years.

10-4 on the "Busch name" angle. Kyle has his surgically-enhanced eared brother to thank for that one. His "The car sucks" remark after last year's Bristol race didn't endear him to anyone either.

"... Rick ought to learn to control..." Rick is a manager, NOT a leader. Kids like Kyle respond to leadership (read Joe Gibbs). Management (read: Rick Hendrick) just makes them surly.

There are a few problems with that idea:

1.Kyle would never shut up and would kill HMS's teamwork.
2.Johnson would be pissed if they released his best friend Mears.
