Move the Southern 500 back to Darlington on Labour Day.

Re: which track deserves a cup venue?

An oval.

But most certainly NOT another 1.5 or 2 mile track.

Preferrably something under one mile with something completely unique from any other on the circuit.

Yeah I know - totally against the present tide.

Re: which track deserves a cup venue?

I don't think anyone deserves another date. If they do, then we need to stat making other tracks just have single date.

I just think 36 races, plus the non points events make a long enough schedule.

And yes Bob, get the Southern 500 out of southern California, and back where it belongs.

I know a lot of folks think tracks "deserve" dates. But they never said "hey NASCAR, are we gonna get a race date??" before they built them.

NO, they just built them and assumed. Too bad for them.

But I'm not completely cold hearted. I would be cool with new tracks getting dates, but again, only if they take ones away from existing tracks.

Of course, which tracks deserve to lose one?? Many of these tracks were built having already been assured of races. So Does Dover, Pocono, Richmond, or another track and area that only exists because of the two dates they have now, just cease to exist?? Most of these tracks only have the race dates from NASCAR to sustain themselves. Instead of one date, they could easily end up folding, and we wouldn't have these tracks at all. Is that fair?? Just because others built a track, and assumed NASCAR would come?

Not to be negative here, and sound like some Old school person, who feels that the sport shouldn't grow, but we have screwed the traditions of this sport up enough.

Coming from someone who lives less than 10 miles from a track, this may sound cold. But hey, having Dover close doesnt bring Daytona any closer.

Those that don't have a track close by just need to have it a goal in life to travel to thier favorite track.

Heck, I'm a big Hockey fan, and they aren't moving the Hall of Fame in Toronto closer, no matter how much more convenient it would be for me.

Fire way!

Re: which track deserves a cup venue?

We need more short(er) tracks with more distiction. I'm sure a big part of the reason for the ratings slip everyone has been talking about is the increasing number of tracks that are exactly the same and lack the prolonged excitment everybody loves. Tracks like where they are now, Fontana. It's always start the race, ride, ride, ride, phantom debris caution and 5 lap dash to create the illusion of a good race. We need to eliminate some of those.

Mansfield always provides good racing with it's 12, 14 and 16 degree progressive banking, and I'd also be in favor of The Milwaukee Mile, IRP and Nashville. Sure, expansion of those places would be required, but it's nothing NASCAR hasn't done before.

Oh, and we need to be back at The Rock and North Wilkesboro too.

Dirt track or short track, one of those would be awesome. I love the short tracks. I have a dream of going to Bristol someday.

Not against MY tide, Wing-Man.

Here is my idea for a workable, do-able unique track, which has beenm done before and was know to put on some fantastic races...make a modern-day version of the old Trenton [NJ] Speedway. Here is a rough discription from our friends at Wikapedia:

The first race at the Fairgrounds was held on September 24, 1900 but racing wouldn't return until 1907. Regular racing began in 1912 and continued until 1941. A new 1 mile dirt oval was opened in 1946. In 1957 the track was paved. It operated in that configuration until 1968 when the track was expanded to 1.5 miles (2.41 km) and a "kidney bean" shape with a 20° dogleg on the back stretch and a wider turn 3 & 4 complex than turns 1 & 2.

It meets NA__AR's absolute preverse desire for a 1.5-mile track but the reverse curve on the back stretch would make it unique and be a challenge to the chassis set up men.

That would be my preference, anyway.

Great choice. Attended races there as a 1 mile dirt, 1 mile paved, and the final 1.5 mile configuration. Indy style, Modifieds, Grand National (now of course NASCAR), another that I cannot just now recall. Tremendously challenging and entertaining track. Our very top choice as well.
