Mark Cronquist best engine builder?

Well we know have seen what he has done with the Toyota's engines. Before him no power. With him more HP than any other manufacture. If he isn't the best he is top 2 or 3 at best.

Re: Mark Cronquist best engine builder?

Me thinks too early, at least with the Cup engine. To date, we've seen it do short runs/races well. Need to get few races down the road to determine whether it is just the most powerful grenade.

Do believe here the Toyo may well prove to be quite good. Perhaps disgustingly good. Will have to see it run a bit more before we dust off the crown.

Re: Mark Cronquist best engine builder?

I think the fact he has always made a ton of power with the Chevy motor, and seems to have had little problem getting the Toyotas to perform make it a no brainer that he is one of the top builders in the sport.

I think that is part of what drew Toyota to Gibbs!

Well there are reports that after the Dyno on Thursday that the engine in Tony's car had more HP than the one in Jr's car. Also that Yota as a whole had more.

I posted in another thread here that Speeds Jimmy Spencer was told the Toyota motors had posted a 30 HP advantage over the next closest Chevy motor.

Could be a long day for us! Still, handling really come into play here. At Talladega, you could hand the crown to the Toys, but here, anything can still happen!

I can't wait for the green flag!

UPDATE: NASCAR tested about 10 different Sprint Cup engines following last Thursday’s Gatorade Duel 150 qualifying races. According to several officials from NASCAR, the manufacturers who race in the Sprint Cup Series and race teams, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity, all parties involved are satisfied that the engines from Toyota, General Motors, Dodge and Ford are competitive with each other in terms of horsepower. Most of the engines tested varied by less than 10 horsepower, multiple sources told SPEEDTV.com, with all but two of the engines within 7-8 horsepower of each other. And none of the four brands tested had a consistent advantage over the others. Media reports on Saturday that Toyotas had a 30-horsepower advantage over the Chevrolets were, to say the least, erroneous. Had that actually been the case, Chevrolet teams would have been raising a ruckus with NASCAR and complaining bitterly to the media about being at a competitive disadvantage. Nothing of the sort has happened

We shall see. The results so far seem to say the Chevy and Toyota have an advantage. Since all the boides are the same, that leave engines.

Re: Mark Cronquist best engine builder?

If these are the engines that Toyota are going to put out consistiently, I think we can pretty much hand them the wins at Talladega.

Re: Mark Cronquist best engine builder?

By the way, during the race, they mentioned to chassic dyno test showed as much as 30 HP diff between the engines, and on Victory Lane tonight, they stated that partially due to that, they will be taking 10 Engines to the engine Dyno to check em out!

Re: Mark Cronquist best engine builder?

Chassis dyno's don't tell much about the actual engine power, just how well it's getting to the ground (which is actually much more important than total HP & torque.)

I'd be interested in finding out what the transmission loss is for the various brands. Denny was having problems shifting, but it seemed to be a characteristic of the trans as best I could figure out his conversation with the crew chief. That may mean they have a trans with less loss than the others...
