Earnhardt's 98 Daytona Win Graphics on 10th Anniversary COT

(from jayski)

Earnhardt's 10th Anniversary of Daytona 500: 1998 Paint Scheme on 'New Car':

Richard Childress and Teresa Earnhardt were guests today of Daytona International Speedway (DIS) to recognize the 10th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's historic win in the 1998 Daytona 500. A 2008 race car with the famous #3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus paint scheme was unveiled and will be on display throughout Speed Weeks in the DIS FanZone as well as be integrated into pre-race festivities of the 50th running of the Daytona 500. Earnhardt's 1998 victory capped off two decades of incredible success yet ultimate frustration at Daytona. He had earned 10 top-fives and 14 top-10 finishes, including four second-place showings, in the previous 19 attempts. Everything came together in his 20th attempt, however, during NASCAR's 50th anniversary. The Intimidator took the checkered flag and then the congratulations of every crew member from every team that had lined up on pit road. The magnitude of the appreciation shown to Earnhardt by his competitors has not been seen since. Motorsports Authentics, through its Action Racing Collectables die-cast brand, will be offering a collectible version of the 10th anniversary edition #3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Chevrolet Impala SS. Pre-orders are being taken on goracing.com, nascar.com and at Motorsports Authentics authorized dealers nationwide. "This is one of the most unique Earnhardt programs ever and we're thrilled to be able to support both DEI and RCR in this one-of-a-kind event," Dyer said. "Earnhardt supporters and NASCAR fans alike that aren't able to get to Daytona to see this car can be part of history by buying their very own die-cast replica today, the one and only time Earnhardt's Daytona 500-winning paint scheme will be emblazoned on a 'new car.'"

I'm sorry, but I just don't know what to think about this. I realize Richard's grandson is coming up through the ranks driving the #3 car, and one day we might see it in the Cup. I have no problem with that. I'm sure it will have it's own distinct graphics to go along with the #3 when that happens, and may even look just like the old 3. I guess I'll be OK with that too. But to put the '98 graphics on it is puzzling. Maybe Richard is getting us ready for the future, but it seems more like a way to sell diecasts. Your thoughts?

Well, I thought that it was kinda cool.

I took a look at the on-line store, "free shipping on orders over $75.00", and the car is priced at $74.99.

I feel it is just a way to sell more die cast. I'm a bit ashamed of RC for continuing to licence more die cast since Dales death. I thought that even the car he sold at Barret Jackson was even in poor taste.

But to each thier own. I won't put any money in his pocket.

Oh, boy ... I'm torn. Love the recognition, but ...

First, unless Jr. is at the wheel, I don't ever want to see the black 3 on the track. I suppose his grandson may have the chance, but I still wont like it.

If they want to commemorate Sr.'s 1998 win, they should have stuck with the design in 1998. I know that was the point, but seeing Dale's car in the 2008 design just doesn't sit well with me. What's next? The Wrangler COT?

I know ... I'm being petty. Won't spend a dime on this.

Neither will I. I have about 13 of Dales cars, and this won't be added to the stable. I just can't support RC and Theresa making money on Dales legacy.

Some would say it is fair to market these cars due to some of his fans never having a chance to buy one. RC even stated after Dales death that there were a lot of cars they would come out with, that had never been done before.

But I am just saddened that the lust for money has them coming out with a COT.

The best way to show your like or dislike of this is by either buying the diecast or not. A hit in the ol' pocketbook will hurt the most

That's true, but at this point, I don't think it matters to them whether I buy it or not...I also read today they've sold over 20,000 of 'em.

I can't imagine that anything that has Earnhardt's name or is Earnhardt related doesn't have to have the approval of Teresa, being that she is the owner of DEI. If you go to Earnhardt's website, there's an E-store, where you can still buy anything Earnhardt. Not to mention that there's X amount of trailers set up at the race tracks each and every week to purchase your brand new just out souvenirs. I think the bulk of your "shame" should be directed at Teresa, as I'm sure that she is who has the ultimate say so on all things Earnhardt.
It is nice for Earnhardt fans, they can still get new Earnhardt gear, but what about other drivers who we have lost? I can't get any new Davey Allison stuff, Kenny Irwin, Adam Petty or Alan Kulwicki, just to name a few. But then again, maybe it's just as well, we know that whoever is in charge of their "marketing" isn't raping or gouging the race fans.

I blame both Theresa and RC. They are both posing with the car in the first post.

Teresa just lost a big portion of her money train as far as collectibles go by letting Jr. leave DEI. That'll all go to Hendrick now. From what I understand, that was her focus, which was part of the issue with Jr. I'm sure there are many, many people who will drop the $75. I'm just not one of them.

Are the Sr. novelty trucks really still at the tracks? Last time I went to a race, there were two.

Sad. I bought a baseball cap last year with a sequins 3 on it. Wear it all the time. Didn't think much about where the money was going. That's all changed now.

There were only 2 at Texas last fall too. I talked to the operator of one of them, and he said he doubted you'd see 2 again this year.

"Only 2"? That's funny. The fact that the 3 trucks are still at the tracks is quite amazing. And, I bet they are still the most crowded! People loved Dale. Even having just one truck makes a statement to The Man!

Re: Earnhardt's 98 Daytona Win Graphics on 10th Anniversary COT

well I think it looks pretty cool, but he didn't drive it so I won't buy it.
I never bought any of the chrome or gold cars because it wasn't something that was real.

as far as the continuing of dale collectables. I think it 's fair, there is a market for them . and if anyone is going to make money from it I'd rather it be dales family and friends.

Sorry for bringing up an older thread, but I just wanted to get this guys commentary on the record, so to speak.

COMMENTARY: Cashing in on the late Dale Earnhardt just doesn't seem right
