Came to me that one of the "new age NASCAR" things is the choice (by drivers) anymore to do obvious and immediate road rage.
"Back in the Day" there was a lot of retaliation on track but it was not immediate, and it certainly was not so obvious. Sometimes paybacks would take weeks, maybe even months, and many times when the payback did occur it did so in such a fashion that could leave the observer with the question - "looked like nothin' more than one of those racin' things, but wonder if that actually had something to do with their run-in at Bristol in the Spring?"
Recall race last year. Andy Petree was part of broadcast team. Someone had just "tugged on Supermans cape". Another of the broadcast team mused - "Wonder if Superman will retaliate?"
Wish I could remember Petree's exact words but they were to the effect - "Oh, it'll happen eventually. And just like E Sr., with his skill it'll be done in ways that will not even let you know he did it".
Not really going anywhere with this. Sorry. Just a brain bubble. |
Well said. Another think I'll add to the mix..."Back in the Day" we didn't have the media we have today. Allot of bumping and banging and retaliation would go uncovered because we didn't have the media idiots in the hundreds with their notepads and their blackberries and their computers, trying the be the first to get the scoop on a nothing story, making it a controversy. When the old media covered a story, it was covered in the context of racing, which it was. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
