Cup Trophy Name

While surfing recently, I read an article about renaming the championship trophy to something other than the Nextel Cup Championship trophy. The author seemed to feel that, like other sports, the trophy need not carry the name of the league sponsor. Hockey has the Stanley Cup and many other championships have a particular name for the trophy. One suggestion was the France trophy. Obviously named for the family that started NASCAR. That wouldn't be my first choice but it does make sense.

What is everyones take on an idea like this, what would you name it and do you think it will ever happen ??

Re: Cup Trophy Name

Well, I seriously doubt that it would ever happen. Nextel probably forks over millions to have their name out there. My opinion is it's just probably some media person spewing. And thanks, LSC for your support w/the thread re: Me. But why didn't you vote? Please vote. Vote for me.

Re: Cup Trophy Name

I actually like the idea of Bill France Cup. And if you want sponsorship dollars, it could always be the Bill France Cup Sponsored by Nextel. That's the way a lot of places are doing it now anyway, so it doesn't seem like there'd be any harm in it.

Re: Cup Trophy Name

I would'nt mind if they honored him as an individual and for what he did.
Leave the sponsors off the name....they change (Winston vs Nextel vs Sprint/Nextel) and we are innondated with them.

BTW..if you are planning any future races.....TRACKSIDE is now an INFIELD ONLY venue. The moved it out of the public area and put it on the infield. My husband and I walked around twice before going into the track at Dega looking for it (I wanted to show my GTG sign). I guess you have to pay more now if you want to go to TRACKSIDE.....more money in someones(?) pocket...right?? I wrote a letter to SPEED TV telling them I did'nt like it....got a computerized reply saying if I did'nt hear from them to write again.Hah!!

Is Bill France dead? If yes, then it would be an honor. If not, then I would not like it.

I believe you are 100% correct Smoke. This is a big money era in Nascar. I wouldn't be surprised if sponsors put their names on the toilet seats in the bathrooms.

Bill France Sr. and original founder of Nascar died in 1992. His son, Bill France Jr., took over in the early 70's and is still alive today but has pretty much relinquished control to Mike Helton.

Re: Cup Trophy Name

Mr. France took stock car racing from the fields of the south and brought it to the masses. He is a true American hero. His name belongs on the cup.
