Also listed are Josh Beckett, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Roger Federer, sprinter Tyson Gay, runner Heile Gebrselassie, LeBron James, Tony Parker, swimmer Michael Phelps and Tiger Woods.

I would think if it's the United States Sports Academy who's wanting fans to vote for Athlete of the Year, that the nominees should be United States citizens...

3 of the nominees are citizens of other countries and only 1 of those even participates as part of a US team (Tony Parker is French but plays for the San Antonio Spurs). The other two, Roger Federer (Swiss) and Heile Gebrselassie (Ethiopian) compete as independents representing their home country.

My vote would go to Phelps...he's been winning and setting world records since the 2004 Olympics and doesn't seem to be even close to slowing down. By current count he owns 6 world records, 5 of which he set in 2007, 7 American records, 1 set in '07, and 12 US records, 5 set in '07. But then he's a swimmer, so he won't get as much notoriety as the media favorites (just about all the rest.)

Ha! Fat flippin' chance! Has a NASCAR driver ever won this award. As for Woods, golfers are less athletic than any NASCAR driver could be.

Farce.

ya forget the rules: anyone who competes in a sport is therefore an athlete.

He is the Dallas Cowboys quarterback SC. But I'll take Tom Brady (NE Patriots) over Romo anytime.

Re: Nextel Cup champion up for athlete of the year

Just as a matter of interest, in the British equivalent last weekend (the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year) Lewis Hamilton came 2nd.

He was "sandwiched" by two boxers. You may have seen the chap who came third fighting Floyd Mayweather on Saturday last.

Thanks, Nevada. I'm a little weak in the football area.

I'd say Farve. But I think the driver that wins with a busted radiator should be on the list, not Mrs. Knaus.
