It's always challenging to see someone float in here and make a post like that. Contrary to what you said, I believe the majority of Sr fans loved him (not liked) because of the man he was, more than the racer he was. Yes we loved his black car, but we loved his car before it was black, because we loved the man behind the wheel on Sunday and away from the track on Monday. And yes we loved his style of driving, but I wouldn't classify it as "mean." Aggressive, yes. Competitive, yes. But mean? Give me a break! It was a style of driving by a driver who hated to lose more than he loved to win. To him, second place was just the first place loser. It's too bad there aren't any drivers with that attitude or style of driving these days. And if there are, it's too bad Brian France and Mike Helton won't let them be who they are or drive that way anymore. It sure would make for more exciting races and a more interesting race year.

That why the fans that loved him, loved him.

I wasn't challenging or confronting you, LSC. I was simply saying "Goodnight". And your opinion does matter to me.

The last thing I want is to become known as "Bozette"!

I'm sorry if my post came out that way to you. That was not the intent at all. People have to push me a long way before I feel challenged. I truly enjoy discussion differing opinions. Just because I may not agree with you doesn't make you wrong at all (OK ... maybe in my eyes it does !!!). I try hard to respect all opinions as long as there is no arrogance going along with it.

With all that said I would once again state that I, personally, don't get much out of these fluff type awards.

I never said that Most Popular wasn't a fluff award. I agree. It is. But it's for/from the fans. I'm a fan ... it's for me! Jr. wins! Yipeeeeeeeeee!

Arrogance? I'm a long way from that!

I just get very annoyed when people (not you specifically) think that any recognition that Jr. has received is because of his namesake or sympathy. That gets under my skin and always will. Jr.'s his own man.

Now for the later part of your post I will jump right up and say that I feel that Jr stands on his own 2 legs. 17 wins in 8 years is a far cry from being popular because of Dad.

I loved to watch Sr. race. While I may not have liked a style of driving I considered to be overly aggressive (just my opinion), I had and still have ultimate respect for him. By all accounts, he was a fine human being, not just a great driver.

I believe that given "free reign", there are many drivers who would drive as aggressively as Sr. did. Even the most "clean" drivers, and I use that term lightly, use their bumpers. Kenseth wrecks Gordon, Gordon wrecks Kenseth a few races later. Montoya wrecks Pruitt. Stewart, the Brother's Busch, Harvick - there are lots of aggressive drivers. I think if there were not rules and regulations to keep things under control you'd have a free for all, leading to lots more wrecks and possibly serious injuries or worse. I love good, hard racing with all the beatin' an' bangin' they can dish out. But they can't be allowed to wreck at will. It's just too dangerous, I think. On the other hand, over regulation is just as bad as no regulation. It's a fine line.

I was never a fan of Sr. because of his aggressive driving but the one thing I'll give him is that if someone wrecked him he was generally pretty passive about it. "That's racin' "

Ah, but LSC, you are not a fan of any driver now are you? Besides, wouldn't you agree that every good driver is aggressive?

I agree with Space, shouldn't be a free for all, nor should a driver be allowed to wreck at will. From my experience, I repeat: my experience, I've very rarely seen a driver intentionally take out another driver ... or admit to it anyway. There was one battle, I think 2006, where two drivers were going at it for payback. If I remember correctly, they were both penalized.

There was a race when Dale wrecked Terry Labonte (I think) and got the win. He was boo'd in Victory Lane. The fans let him know that was unacceptable. However, I don't think Dale intentionally wanted to wreck Terry. Keyword here is intentionally!

This thread has gotten way off topic. Partially my fault. Sorry.

Like it or not, Jr. is the fan favorite for 2007 for whatever reason.

For me, and you'll like this LSC, Mikey is likeable, but how the hell did he come in 3rd behind Gordon?! I'm glad he did, but ... ?

Next ...

Penny .. it's all a play on words. I think my statement often has been tha I am not a fan of any ONE driver. I have a fair amount of drivers I like for a variety of reasons. As you may also know there are a few I don't care for.

Now, is every good driver aggressive ?? Probably ... but.

I won't name names but I think there are some that are OVERLY-aggressive. To the point where they are a menace on the track. No, not every race they drive in but, from my view from the fence, to often to legitimize it as an accident or a one time event.
