Don't have an answer for that. You could say the same for Jarrett. I wonder if this voting is a free-for-all. By that I mean, there's no set list of drivers to vote on. You can pretty much cast a vote for anyone ... I think.

I know you and many others on this forum will cringe, but Mikey is a likable guy.

Farce? I don't agree with that. It's the fans favorite/most popular ... no stats ... no hype ... just voting on who they like (for watever reason). I read somewhere than Jr. got 1.5M votes out of the 3M+ that were cast this year. Yikes!

May mean nothing to you and many others, but apparently it does mean something to the fans, thus the incredible number of votes!

You're absolutely right. I forgot that. However, here again the "sympathy" vote is challenged. If there was ever a year for Jr. to get the so-called sympathy vote, it was 2002. Didn't happen. If Bill wouldn't have taken his name off, would he still be voted "Most Popular" today? Between him and Petty, it was pretty much a monopoly.

Actually I would disagree with your assessment on his likability. My personal view is that he acts a bit more immature than most plus, and you may hate the term, but he is a mega sponsor whore. I know they all have to get the names of the $$$ people in but he just over does it for my taste.

I'd be willing to consider that there is no control on the voting. By that I mean that I could get on my computer and vote a thousand times for driver "X". If that is the case then I stand by my statement that it is a farce. Maybe Bob or Ducky can verify this but I believe I had heard that Bill Elliott used to pass out ballots to anyone and everyone. Nothing wrong with campaigning, but ..... well lets just say I see it as a worthless award.

Just MY opinion Penny so don't beat on me to badly.

Beat on you? You? I wasn't beating on you at all. You have your opinion of Nit Wit (did I get it right this time?) and others have theirs.

Beat on you? I've been getting ripped up one side and down the other for days! What? Has December been declared "National Pick On Penny Month"?

The list of eligible drivers are the drivers who were active in Cup that year. Anyone can vote, and can vote as many times as they want.

Some driver's fans actually have "voting parties" where they attempt to "stuff" the ballot box for their hero.

Elliott has often stated he owes the award to a small group of zealous fans. They seem to have the perseverance to make sure their hero gets the award.

Worthless or not, it's still recognized as a major award. No different than whatever-sport-you-care-to-mention Favorite Player awards...

Gosh, I must have missed that announcement .. I've got to make sure to note that on my 2008 calendar so I don't forget...

Hey Penny, Congrats on the Honor. Cake and DOYC at the trailer, our treat!

note to Bette: we need a "special" cake (can be a cake sized cookie) ASAP!

Oh, boy! Them's fightin' words! And if your theory is true, why wasn't Sr. ever voted Most Popular Driver?

I'm gonna stop now ... before I have a full-blown panic attack!

Right. The year he died, but he was never voted Most Popular before.

I guess that blows the macho redneck type and they liked sr to begin with bcoz of the blk car and "mean" driving out of the water.
